I have been searching the classified and found a vehicle that is running on LPG, but has no certificate with it.

Would you ever need to produce this?

I have been running LPG cars for over 10 years now, always declared when insuring, but never been asked for a certificate. Definitely don't need it for an MOT. I don't actually think a certificate is given to new conversions these days, I believe a data-base exists which details are logged ... I am sure someone will come along and say otherwise.

Either way you can take your existing LPG car along to any reputable speciailist for a safety approval check, and details to be entered.

When I recently sold my LPG car the buyer said there were new rules coming into force so it might be worth a Google.

IIRC it was to do with checking / servicing the system and that the tanks have "expiry dates" to have them rechecked is costly so I think they have to be replaced - every 10 yrs IIRC.

But I've run them for years with no issues so far.

Not sure how true that is, there were loads of stories on the new MOTs being very strict, and a lot of it turned out to not be true.

In any case, replacement LPG tanks are cheap and easy to fit, hardly a disaster.

Never needed a certificate for mine, insurance declared, etc.

The only thing I can think of that would require the LPG certificate, is if you want to register your vehicle for exemption from the London congestion charge. This may also apply to other cities with a congestion charge.

...which is not possible anymore anyway.

I can't really see why your insurers would care about seeing a certificate. Claiming the car is LPG converted seems unlikely to lower your quote, and if it happens to spontaneously combust they would be even less likely to pay out. So why would they want verification of anything?

It's to demonstrate it's been fitted to the approved standard that's all. To them that means it's not going to go up in flames and result in a claim after a dodgy DIY install.

I had to provide a copy of my certificate to my insurers when I bought my current car a few months ago. Insurers were Adrian Flux.

It also covers them because if it goes up in flames and takes out someone elses garage - if it has a cert then they aren't liable.

Don't ask how I know this - but it wasn't my car that caught fire.
