Whats the black box behind the dash by the stereo

Noticed it when fitting my new MP3 player at the weekend.

Its got some cooling fins on it and a ribbon cable.

Im guessing its either;
1. Airial amplifier (but big and why the ribbon cable)
2. Instrumentation controller
3. Heating controller box.
4. It really is a black box beacuse the griff is more like a plane than a car!

My money is on number 3.
Wasn't important as it wasn't broken so I didnt bother to trace the wires.
