I'm part way into planning our annual car Tour.
The rough intention is to get down to the area surrounding Clermont Ferrand in a reasonably direct route, and then have a couple of days in the area before heading northwards again ( coming/going to Calais).

I think it's likely that we'll take a direct route using motorway until we get to approx Orlean and from there to Aubusson which is roughly where we need to be for the 1st night we'd want to be using backroads.
so 1st question. Anyone got any suggestions for smaller/interesting roads that between Orleans/Aubusson area? By interesting i mean not stretches of dead stright road? We all have little Caterham type cars and ideally like to find some twisties/switchbacks to appreciate the cars a bit.

2nd question.
I've read up as much as i can about roads around/south of C/Ferrand, our route on day 2 would take us down as far as Aurillac area. Any 'must do's ' ?? again, twisties/interesting/views.this day will solely be backroads. Our limit for miles in total is about 225-245. The name of any roads/landmark is helpful and i can plot those into the rough route i've drawn up.....

day 3 takes us from Aurillac down past Millau/Gorges Du Tarn and back up towards 'Thiers' - so aside from the Bridge/Gorges - any other must see's/do roads? soley backroads today

d4 is Thiers area back North towards Troyes.....again, any recommends for route/roads that are smaller/interesting?

any help/advice welcomed.
cheers
Mark

I've long regarded the road from Riom-es-Montagne (north of Aurillac and Salers) to St Flour via Murat as one of the all-time great driving roads. Maybe you could fit it in somehow. Riom is nice and it's easy to get to Clermont the pretty way from there while St Flour is on the main Clermont route north of Millau anyway. Have a great trip.

thanks for that, had factored in a few roads around that area crossing the road that you mentioned without taking the route along it - if it's that good will try and re-work my rough route to include a section......

that's just the sort of info that helps.....cheers.
