Evening all,

When I've restored and flogged my S1 Elise, I fully intend to buy a Griff. I've considered other cars like a 911, DB7, Jag XKR etc. but for me the Griffith always rises to the top of the short list........

Anyway, I'm doing my research via The Bible and alike and whilst I know there are differences in the two engine types I'm left wondering what the general opinion is, i.e. is the Serp better than the pre Serp, or, if properly sorted / maintained are they as good as each other, etc. etc.

Your thoughts / opinions concerning the attributes of each would be appreciated

Ta

A lot of threads on this, Google them. Try this one:

Main changes (improvements) to a serpentine engine as I recall are:

  • Larger, grooved timing/drive belt
  • Stronger, cross bolted crank
  • Stronger webs on the block
  • Improved oil pump
Generally on the Griffith, the changeover came late 94 with the general rule that serp engines adopted the T5 gearbox changing from the Rover box.

No doubt you will get additional contributions with pluses and minuses. Pete

Just my opinion but I wouldn't rule out a car because it's not a later serp engine - just buy on overall condition. Plus the precats were all preserp - and ignoring them would be a huge mistake smile

Not all 'serps' are cross-bolted. Later 450 serps in the Chimaera are, and a only a handful of 500's.
I've had two Griff's one a pre-serp' and the other a serp' [not x-bolted] both were fine.

Thanks for the replies all, much appreciated.

Like I said I'm not ready to buy yet but it doesn't harm to do my research up front.

I haven't found a huge amount that would force me to preclude Pre-Serps so as you say, buy on overall condition.

Thanks again

I have an early 1994 preserp , it has a T5 gearbox. I thought all 500's were T5 gearboxes.

The only things i dont like about preserps are :-

1.They usually dont have power steering and impossible to find.

2. When changing oil you have to be careful not to let oil pump drain as its a pain having to remove pump.Ive only had it happen once. If you do it carefully there isnt a problem.

Ive had the car 10 yrs and these are the only gripes i have,,

Alex
