Routes reported/released today and I was surprised to learn that they are coming past my house.

I have no problem with people that want to do these type of things but I have not been told that our road would be closed.

Should I have been told it will be closed?

Anyone who had the same thing last year with the French race?

Told about roads closing? By York CC? With time to make contingency plans?

Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!

You should be on the stage.

Aye, it was only released on Wednesday. Its all been very hush hush until then so you wouldnt have received any forwarning from your local council.

Why has it been hush hush?

What the score with road closures, what can I expect to be told asked to do? Asking because of your occupation but if it's not your field then no worries.

I contacted them with some questions about the road closure and asked if cars parked on the road side would need to be moved.
They replied today:

Thank you for your interest in the Tour de Yorkshire. We don't know the exact timings for the starts and finishes yet - or when the race will be passing through towns and villages - but the races are expected to start in the hour around midday each day, and finished in the hour around teatime. Road closures will be announced in March. Most will be rolling road closures lasting no more than an hour, apart from the start & finish lines where the road closures will be longer. Hope this helps. As soon as they are available the timings will be on the Tour de Yorkshire website: www.letouryorkshire.com

You can also keep up-to-date with the latest news by signing up for our Tour de Yorkshire enewsletter, Allez Yorkshire: www.letouryorkshire.com/email
So basically haven't got very much organised at the moment!

Our nearest main road was undergoing major resurfacing which meant no cars parked on it and so on.
We got a letter two weeks before it started. I would expect this will be something similar.

Thank Christ, not on the route. 30 minutes cycle away though so ideal for me.

On the British Tour many of the smaller roads are only closed off by a rolling block of motorbikes and escort cars/police for about ten mins or so as the peloton passes.

It's coming past the top of my village where there are some massive speed bumps. I wonder whether they'll remove them for the event or just expect the cyclists to cope with them like us mere mortals.

Drum up a bit of publicity and interest I suspect, having a big reveal on a specific date creates more of an event out of something.

They'll probably just run rolling road blocks. I've done similar for military funerals in the past where we've closed roads for about 20 minutes while everything passes through.

I wouldn't worry about it, I bet it'll have very little affect on you.

Thanks for the reply Rob.

Yes, they have said it will 'probably' be rolling closures but as I said they don't seem to actually have very much confirmed.

It will effect me as it comes passed my house so I'll not be able to have free access when I want it. My car is parked on the roadside so I'll have to move that to stop the risk of damage by spectators or cyclist crashing!

RicksAlfas - We had a hand delivered letter this week to let us know about the A166 being closed overnight between us and Driffield. It had been in the local paper weeks ago! But the letter from ERYC gave a lot more information including contact numbers for the guy in charge.

I emailed my local councillor last Friday to ask him he had anymore information - no reply as yet!

I had an idea over the weekend - the event is being televised, my front garden is, barring the pavement, next to the road, anyone/business want to put a big advert banner up for free?

There's rules for Motorsport about informing people along the route of rallies despite them only driving past and as yet, not closing the roads. I would assume there are similar rules in place for other sports. If you live half way up a major climb then you may get a closure as there'll be loads of speccies. If the entry list is approaching TDF standard and the anticipated crowds are huge then they may have to close the roads completely but in the past, these events such as Tour UK haven't attracted the media hype and are only attended by die hard cyclists who normally assemble at the interesting bits so they have local closures on bits such as Holme Moss or Rosedale Chimney, neither of which are to be used on this one, strangely.

The rules for uk cycling used to be that you raced on your own side of the road and I'm not sure at what level this changes to both sides and requires traffic stoppages in both directions.

I really do think your worrying a bit too much, the council and race planners are'nt going to make you a prisoner in your own home.

It passes right in-front of my house too, my plans involve standing with a beer in my hand and watching them fly past, then maybe eating some curry.

Chill out a bit and try to enjoy it, you are in a prime position to after all!

I've been involved in organising road rallies (the ones with selectives, yes I am that old!) and we had to notify the police etc. months in advance with exact times etc. and if we'd missed one small detail it would be knocked back.

The first I knew about this was the press release.

I think they are trying to drum up interest/sponsorship and haven't worked out the fine details yet.
But not knowing or having planned the start times seems a bit odd.

I'm not really worrying more surprised about the way we have been informed and the seemingly lack of planning.

We are on a sprint section so they will fly passed. I'll watch and may have a beer in hand as you suggest!

I remember years ago watch the TdF in France - hours of promo cars etc coming passed followed by 30 seconds of bikes!

I can only imagine they've not put any plans into place yet, there's not been a thing mentioned about it in our office yet and I know full well that I will end up having some involvement.

Burley in Wharfedale being the village? I'm guessing you're referring to the speed bumps through Burley Woodhead? Assuming I'm right I can't see that they can leave the cyclists to bump over them they're pretty big bumps in a 4x4 never mind a bike.

Yes that's the one. Will be interesting to see what's planned.

Hi. I'm a fellow B in W resident. Agreed interesting to see what's planned. I'd hope they won't be spending public money to alter the road for this.

Yet if there was an international car race that required some road modifications that would be ok?
