Planning a long weekend driving in North Yorkshire in March.

Has anyone any recommendations for "must do" roads and any villages which we should visit. Planning to stay at the MacDonald Hotel, Guisborough but open to any suggestions.

Many thanks.
Rich

Good hotel. Try coming off the A1 at Thirsk turning and then take A170 to Pickering then A169 to Sleights/ Whitby via Goathland, ( home of heartbeat ). Loads of nice roads around to loop back on + you can cross back over the A1 into the dales to pick up nice roads around Bedale and across to Hawes etc taking in Buttertubs pass etc.

Enjoy.

Can only echo the above. Head to Pickering, turn round and there's are tonnes of nice sweeping rounds through the moors. Hole of horcum might be a nice check point if you fancy a break.

Stokesley to Helmsley and then Hutton-le-Hole to Castleton along Blakey Ridge, back to Guisbrough. Also worth turning back and heading to Rosedale from Blakey.

Loads of great roads in the area. Happy to show you a few.

Thank you so much, guys. Perfect information.

I assume you mean the B1257 Stokesley to Helmsley road. It's listed as one of the great biking roads but I was wondering if it would be ok for Corvettes.

Another vote here for the B1257 and A169 roads. It's also worth noting that the Blakey Ridge road features in Evo magazine when they test cars in this area. I personally would recomend stopping at the Lion Inn on Blakey Ridge for some fantastic food.

As above, we have family in Castleton, so regularly use the Blakey Ridge road.

With a bit of luck in terms of avoiding heavy traffic, the A169 and the Hemsley to Stokesley road (1257) are a joy to use.

The main hazards include an ever growing peloton of lycra-clad cyclists, motorcyclists using the b1257 as a racetrack and sheep on the moors.

Edited to add recommendations for both Guisborough Hall and the Lion at Blakey.

Thank you for all your responses. I don't think we'll have any trouble sorting out a route and lunch stop. Accommodation is proving to be a little more tricky, though. It must get mighty popular around your neck of the woods at Easter.

Watch out for the camera vans on that road though.

If you need to be close to Guisborough then The Grinkle Park Hotel is a reasonable second option and about 10 minutes away

That is indeed a deceptively rough road if you have any kind of sporty suspension going on. Would be a decent drive for a best smoker barge/wafter with soft suspension though yes. Also there are far too much suicidal sheep along there to make decent progress.

Back road from Pickering to Whitby. 2 miles further on from the pic is the big 1:5 hill down into Egton Bridge and then the 1:3 hill up the other side to join with the A171.

It's a great road and no bother in my rose jointed, nitroned, track oriented Lotus. We have so many great and varied roads round here.
