Does anyone else have a handbrake cable with the outer coated in plastic?
I've got a new complete cable and it doesn't have a plastic coating.
But my old one not only has a black plastic coating bit a lump of rubber pipe cable tied to it too for where it goes over the diff and through the chassis by the fuel line.

I am curious if the old one was original and the new one is odd, or if the old one was from something else and the new one is how it should be,

Yep, that's exactly what I wanted to know Ste.
Oddly, because of a cock up by one of the suppliers I have a new handbrake cable here today, and another one due to arrive tomorrow so we will see how they differ.

Interestingly the 2nd handbrake cable arrived today and it also doesn't have a plastic coating on the outer cable which goes over the diff and is tied to the wishbone.
This one is a Borg and Beck BKB1151
The one I actually fitted last night was a generic BC2256

The gen Ford one (Sierra) always had the black outer coating sleeve but I have seen the naked ones you speak of Ian I would imagine pattern ones/generic are going to be luck of the draw if its covered or not scratchchin I renewed mine with a gen Ford one about 5 years ago I has had it in stock for 15 years rolleyes a spare for a Capri rear disc conversion that was never needed whistle
