In case you folks haven't yet clocked it, there's a newly installed HADECS3 speed camera on the M62 eastbound just before the M621 slip. It's on the gantry with the HADECS2 cameras and looks like this -

Will keep an eye out for this. Wonder if there will be another springing up nearby?

I went for a reccy on my way home from work this morning and there's 2 more sprung up! Next one is about half way between J27 and J28 eastbound, just before it drops down into the dip. They are really well hidden behind the support post on this gantry and you'd only know it's there if you're specifically looking for it. eek The other one is on the westbound carriageway between J28 and J27, just in the dip after Tingley. There's no others westbound between the M1 and Huddersfield that I could see, just that single one after Tingley.

Noticed these have appeared on the m1 also do these negate the need for the over gantry type speed camera?

They discretely cover all 3 lanes. There are ones on the M1 near 29A and on the 50 stretch near Nottingham. Have you spotted others on the M1?

That's the area I've spotted them through the 50 zone and just after towards Notts

It's not my pic - I just typed in HADECS3 to google images and it was one of the first ones that appeared.

The implications are that if you go faster than the speed limit you could get a ticket. hehe

No I didn't have you down as a Turkish truck driver.
So pretty much apropos nothing re a speed cameras on the M62 then?
I feel let down, I was expecting laser guided missiles or something.

Yeah, the missus also spotted these when we got back from holiday this week as it's the stretch she uses for her daily commute.

They're not on every gantry, westbound there's one on the 3rd gantry after the entry slip from J28, eastbound there's one on the big gantry before J27 (the one that already has Gatsos on it) and another one on the 3rd gantry after the entry slip from J27.

These cameras are both forward and rearward facing. They are not Gatsos, they are in addition to and work independently of any existing Gatsos and do not rely on the lines on the road, ie they will still be reading your speed even when you have travelled beyond the white line markings in the lanes as long as you are in their line of sight. Incidentally, and this is commonly known, the Gatsos themselves are switched on at all times, even when the variable speed signs are not illuminated, they will capture vehicles travelling in excess of 70mph when the signs are not illuminated (the missus has seen them flash in these circumstances on numerous occasions so it's true).

These new style cameras have already been reported in the press earlier in the year, see link to article below and are now officially resident in West Yorkshire.

Beware, Big Brother is watching you!

They might be on at all times, but you don't get a ticket for doing an indicated 80 through them if the signs are off.

Do you want to be our local guinea pig to see what speed they're set to trigger at then? spin

This guy apparently done by the HADECS3 ones on the M25 at Clackett Lane whilst doing 96mph, so they do seem to work when NSL.

And they're seemingly fully functioning when a reduced limit is in force too.

I noticed on the M1 yesterday that they have already installed the platforms for the new HADECS3 cameras both northbound and southbound either side of J40. The cameras aren't installed yet but it's clear that is where they're going to be once the work is complete.

Do these cameras work like average speed cameras too? Is that why they are often installed in two or threes in close proximity? Or are they just like a gatso so you only have to worry about obeying the speed limit for a short distance in the cameras range?

Just where the camera is. Can't enforce an average when every gantry displays a different temporary limit.

Just a heads up for you guys on the M62, there's a 4th HADECS3 camera currently being installed westbound just after J27 at the start of the downhill bit (same gantry as the eastbound camera). The shelf for the cameras has been installed and camera pole 200 yds before the actual HADECS camera to record the speeds being displayed is nearly finished too so I reckon it'll be up and running within the next couple of weeks. There's a load being installed on the M1 around the 3 Wakefield junctions too frown .

M1...Between J26 & 27, one southbound, one northbound on the same gantry + one southbound just after the big blue sign for Trowell services. I saw that flash the other day when the lower limits were not active, so they're on all the time.

There's another on the M1 northbound around Luton and one southbound, just before the M25 slip.

Some of the gantries under construction from J28 northwards have a flat platform on the vertical support, so these might be a different mounting method that won't be as easily seen.

Note that some cameras are not two separate units, but hide in an elongated box on the mounting arm, which is smaller than the original ones.

I've heard from a mate that there will be one just before junction 40 going southbound at some point and now all the extra sticking out brackets are there ready for the cameras

The name "speed camera" really doesn't do these justice.

Sounds like a recipe for lots of cases of needing to prove your innocence if you get your plate cloned!

sorry for the dumb question but what do these speed cameras do exactly?
