After looking at the Midlands, France (only kidding), Norfolk, Suffolk and seemingly every other Shire in England, Mrs Garyhun and I (me and the missus in local dialect) have decided that we are moving to Yorkshire.

The reason is that she comes from the area and we now want to be closer to friends and family who are all around the Liversedge area.

We want to be roughly 1-1:15 hours from Liversedge so we're not in each others pockets and would like to be in the nicer areas which I think means West or North of there (but please tell me if I'm wrong about that). Harrogate and villages around York are the obvious places to look but I would love the wisdom of local PHers to help us pinpoint any other areas we should be considering.

We will obviously be asking friends and family but they are limited in their knowledge of all areas so I'm open to any suggestions on here.

Thanks so much
Gary

Any other requirements? Quiet countryside? Close to a city? Schools? Budget?

Just trying to get a better pic for places. I live close to Leeds/Bradford airport and it's perfect for us. £20 taxi into (well out of) Leeds, into the dales in 5-15 minutes depending on mode of transport. Great schools nearby which matters for the kids

There are good areas and bad, do you have work lined up yet?
It might make a difference as to where you want to live as there are some truly appallingly busy routes that you would want to avoid.
You could do worse than live in Birstall/upper Batley (where I live) some lovely houses and really good for getting to the motorway to get to Leeds/Bradford and good roads to wakefield and huddersfield

Sorry guys, I completely forgot to add any details - DOH!!!

I work from home so that will not effect location.
We'd prefer a nice village with some shops that we can walk to get basic shopping (milk, bread etc) and a pub for a beer and a bite to eat. Don't want to be city based.
Happy to get public transport for the odd Leeds night out, don't need to be too close and am happy to get taxis to any other nice restaurants that might too far to walk.
Budget up to £650k but would be great if we could get something for a lot less.

Hopefully that gives you a better idea. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Well for that I'd recommend north and north west leeds. Roundhay, Alwoodley, Adel, Cookridge, Horsforth, Rawdon, Guiseley, Ilkley, Bramhope. See what you think

Many thanks.

We're going to spend a week or two up there in a few weeks time so will research before and then visit while we're up there.

Will let you know.

I prefer the Harrogate area, slightly biased I admit, but I'd consider Hampsthwaite, Pannal, Burnbridge and Follifoot. They're all nice areas with shops and pubs nearby.

Edit: How could I forget Birstwith and Burton Leonard! Both lovely villages too.

That's great thanks. We have Harrogate on our list already so it's great to have the places around that you've listed.

Boroughbridge or any of the surrounding villages, pretty close to York and Harrogate but not anywhere as busy them.

I'm biased!

My wife works in Leeds.
I worked across the Yorkshire region and occasionally needed to visit other counties.

We love access to the Moors, the coast And the Dales.

Good schools too.

With that in mind we looked at villages south of York.

We found a house in Askham Bryan.
The village has a church, village hall, pub and farms for eggs etc.

It is on the A64 and close to the A1 for travel.
The railway mainline East Coast is close too.
Access to Leeds, Harrogate and York is easy.

I now work from home. I have a annexed office.
There is a detached double garage.

Enough of the sales pitch.
It's for sale on Right move!

Great place to live.

I live a couple of miles from here and this was going to be my suggestion. Pub does excellent food and its close enough to York to be convenient and not too expensive in a taxi. Most of the houses are just out of my price range unfortunately.

I also live just south of York. Its a superb spot. Some lovely villages, great pubs, it's quiet and you feel remote but I'm 20 minutes drive into Leeds, 15 minutes into York, 15 minutes into Selby. Train stations in Leeds, York and Selby take me to London if I need to. Best of all, there are some great roads and easy access to North Yorkshire and the East Coast.

Nowt for sale in my village but here's some examples in nearby villages...

We moved to Collingham in April and absolutely love it here. Local shops are good, we have a great deli and superb wine store. Wetherby is just down the road, Harrogate is 15 minutes away and local transport links are good.

Easingwold, Ripon, Masham and Boroughbridge in that order. Easingwold is the perfect large village/ small township . Ripon bigger and worth living there for Curzon cinema alone . Masham stupidly pretty and Boroughbridge has come on in leaps and bounds , having been at a very low ebb in 80s . I live near Thirsk - North Yorkshire's answer to Twin Peaks...

Ah, don't cry little one ..... be a happy bunny smile

We've decided that trying to be close to both sets of parents just ends up with us making massive compromises which could mean we end up somewhere where we know absolutely no one. In Yorkshire we have all Lou's family and most of mine too (sister and all my nephews and nieces) apart from my parents. Plus we have a load of friends that were originally Lou's but are now ours after 9 years, so it makes perfect sense.

My parents will also be able to visit and stay for weeks at a time so they can use ours as a base to see all their grand and great grand children more easily. There's even family in Newcastle which wold then only be 1:44 away.

All good stuff!!!!
