Planning a road trip, with about 7 days to spend in and around Avignon/Vienne/Tournon/etc. Which means we'd like to find a place to stay. We'll be touring, wine-hunting, etc and want a base to return to each night. And that probably means renting a self-catering house/flat/gite instead of a hotel.

So... any advice on where would be a good base? Inside the city? Or more rural - Les Baux/etc?

TIA!

Were in Aubignan thus week, staying at studio rental. Airbnb. Great place with secure parking, pool and studio flat. BBQ. Petanque pit. Table tennis. All within easy walking distance if the village. With shops, bar and restaurant. Great wines just up the road. Mt Ventoux and wonderful driving roads.

Excellent - thanks for the info, hadn't even thought Airbnb could be relevant. smile Seems to be a lot of potential places to stay near Avignon on the site.

And it looks like you weren't right in the middle of decent wine country. Did you visit any wineyards for tour/tasting/buying?

Much prefer L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue if I'm staying round that area.

We stayed in Le Barroux which was nice last summer. Lots of wine and 15 mins from Vaqueyras.

Was in Le Barroux this Sept.
Great little place.
Nice hotel there with scenic terrace.
The geranium? Or something like?

Yeh, there are quite a few places there. There is a restaurant and bistro there as well, which I thought the bistro was "so so" but my parents and the rest of my family thought was great. Le Barroux gives good access to Oranges, Avignon, Cavaillon, Isle sur le sorgue, mont ventoux, bedouin, etc. There are stunning walks through the vineyards which are marked with signs so you don't really need a map. Lovely, lovely place.
