Hi, my daughter passed her driving test this afternoon and we are all very happy! She has a Fiesta 1.25 which I bought for her to learn in. Now we need to insure it so she can hit the road. Any recommendations?

Thanks.

Whoever will even consider insuring her at a cost you can afford. Seriously, hit a comparison site.

TBH, that was the defining factor for us. We ended up with Admiral multicar, but that was because they did not have their own car and as well as being good value for our three vehicles, named drivers earned NCB.

Whatever you do, prepare for an empty bank account - my insurance for a Fabia Estate 1lt/100bhp with three 18-22 year old boys went from £650 last year to £3900 this year....

Bloomin heck! Thank you. She’s been earning NCD on her own car for 2 years through Collingwood insurance. So that should help. Her friend just passed and managed to insure a Polo for £2k, so that’s sort of what I’m expecting. Will hit the usual price comparison sites and go from there.

As above whoever will take you.
Try phoning a broker like Adrian Flux too as they have access to more specilist companies for young drivers.

Make sure both parents are on as named drivrrs too. It usually helps price even if you never intend on driving the car.
Also means your insured if you ever need to move the car off the drive etc.

Try to avoid black box policies if you can unless thats the only way to get an acceptable price.

For our 3 children we found Admiral the best in terms of price and service and no need for Black box.
We insured them whilst learning on their own cars in their names so when they passed tests whilst it meant a large uplift in premium they also had earned 1 year NCB “ quicker “.
Start with the meerkats or confused etc.
As has been said add yourself as named driver/s and think about limiting annual mileage.
From memory 7k and below was a good threshold v discount but may of course have changed now.

If you can, price up insurance to start in a couple of week's time, rather than straight away. That knocked about £200 off my daughters quote (which ended up as £1300 for an old Yaris with Admiral). Also, add yourself/your wife/partner as a named driver, as that knocks a bit off too.

+1 for Admiral who cover my daughters’ Mini, though who is competitive at any point does change.

But yes, hit the comparison sites… good luck, and welcome to our world of the feeling of relief each time you hear the car pull into the drive!

My daughter recently passed and had a years no claims with collingwood for her learner insurance which brought the insurance quote down from £2800 to £1600. That was with Hastings and a black box.

Thanks All, used Confused.com and ended up with QuoteMeHappy, which seems to be owned by Aviva. It’s a telematics policy which interfaces with your phone and gives you feedback on your driving. Not ideal but hopefully will encourage her to be careful and she won’t like being told off by her phone. It was also £350 cheaper with £200 lower excess than no black box. At £1250 including breakdown cover. Added the wife as a named driver which also helped.

She gone on her first solo drive and I have mixed feelings. Proud but worried!
