Are these cars likely to give bother on short journeys ? Or if mixing that with say a 30mins drive a week does that balance things out to avoid any issues ?

No; fine... Give it an Italian tine up every so often and it'll be spot on

I've only done just over 4k miles in my F31 325D since Jan 2023; it runs sweet as a nut

Modern DPF management is much better than earlier systems. I've got a 2009 Golf TDI and a 2016 F30 330d and neither complain about short journeys.

A passive regen cruising on the motorway for 30 mins at 2000 rpm will certainly help keep it clean though.

The only thing I would say against an italian tune up on diesels is it dumps more soot into the DPF, so try and maintain a constant rpm for as long as possible.

No issues at all. I've ran my F11 520d for 3 years now and it's a mixture of 5 days 12 mile commute to work and back and the odd longer distance drive. It's been faultless. Very comfy car on a long journey too, have managed Loughborough to Edinburgh without stopping. About to sell mine as we have a Cupra Ateca on the drive now but it's given us a solid 30k miles.
