I had it pointed out to me by some smug so and so the other day that neither my rear left light or brake light were working.

Changed the bulbs on both, brake light is now fine but the rear light itself is still not working so I'm a bit baffled as to what's gone wrong.

All the bulbs on the left are fine (checked them on the driver side light cluster) so its not the bulb thats rogered. Checked the contacts from the wiring onto the light cluster itself and all seems to be OK. Had a look in the bible about fuses etc but I understand there's no specific fuse that would affect just the rear light on one side.

Did a search through here yesterday about this problem and some suggested checking wiring contacts behind the passenger seatbelt mounting. Can't seem to find this so can somebody help explain either where to look or what other things I should be checking or lastly anything I've missed so far?

I'd really appreciate any help with this as the MOT's coming up in a couple of weeks or so and I don't think it's going to pass without a rear light!!

Many thanks - Chris

The connectors are 'normally' behind the little flap of carpet behind the door and next to the seatbelt reel. sometimes they get corroded so good idea to give them a clean and then cover them in vasoline.

I would of thought if it was a dodgy earth you would have a problem with the whole light cluster, but could be wrong( as usual ).

I had the same problem last year and it turned out that I had a short in the cluster plate that holds the bolbs. It was pretty hard to spot but you could use a multimeter to check it. Otherwise check that you are getting power to the cluster plate and trace it back.

Cheers for the comments guys. Was looking for said flap of carpet last night and think I may be getting somewhere. The only problem is that all of the interior carpets were replaced by the previous owner for some very plush silver ones and I don't want to ruin what's been done with them as whoever did it has done a very good job indeed!

Curiously this problem with the light has cropped up in the last week when on one night I left the drivers door slightly open resulting in the interior light being left on all night. Without the engine on the battery's now only reading just above 11volts, although it goes back into the middle of the dial when you start the car up?

Bloody strange all this. Just hope It can be sorted out with the minimum of hassle.

Cheers - Chris
