Hey Ph'ers, I have seen a few of these threads before, So I thought I would try one myself...

I found this item and wondered if anyone knows what it is? Where it is from? What it does/did?

It is hard black plastic ball about 3cm across....

It's a stopper, designed to prevent writing implements from rolling off work surfaces.
As you have demonstrated, its use is highly intuitive.

Scuba widget thing from a Fosters smooth lager can. Yeah, i was curious too.

Edit: Blast, beaten to it! These balls kill big bubbles, and cut them up into small, deformed bubbles.
