Anyone doing the "Mini Miglia" next month?

I was worried the historic rally links might mean the route was a bit rough so I emailed the organiser. He said:

"The course car for the event is a 2012 C30 Volvo, so the roads are of a good standard. There are two fords in the route, but we have put a cut in the route just in case you don't want to go through them or the course car decides its a little too deep for the cars. I went round the route on Monday and there are some really good roads that haven't been on any events for a long time but all the roads are tarmac."

Entries so far range from tasty classics such as a Jaguar XK150 and Porsche 912 all the way through to a Vauxhall Tigra.

I'd like to have a look round the 944 if you enter :-)

I'll tell you what I think I know, but this is very dangerous as I've never done one of these before either...

This run is what is known as a "Touring Assembly". There is no timing at all, no requirement to go fast or slow and you're not forced to follow a fixed route. The point of this is to ensure there is no competition element on the public road so no special insurance or preparation is required etc.

It's effectively a scenic tour - but - you set off at intervals and there is an optional route to follow with checkpoints of a sort so you can experience the classic rally roads of the 50's and 60's. Effectively this means as a team you can experience old style rally navigation and of course I'm sure some crews will take pleasure from making progress in safe manner and visiting as many key locations as possible I understand there is the option of harder road-rally navigation to follow if you really want a challenge.

In addition there will be the chance to do some "tests" on private land. These are seperate to the main event. I'm expecting these to be a run around some cones like this, featuring benjj at 19:31 (but hopefully less wet) (note big merc just before him too!)

Yes, but I think I'll already be in a rush at 6am just to get sorted and there! We'll be faffing around as my co-driver needs to be in Leeds by 6pm so we're going to leave his car in Colne for a fast getaway.

I expect the roads to be a lot like this video. I think there will be a good percentage of bumpy, narrowish country roads so an SL might be a challenge - but, check with Steve Warrington for a proper answer.

Already looking like an interesting mix of classics, rally prepped moderns and daily-drivers. I'm pretty sure the Micra will be rally-prepped and the Corolla I think is a rear-wheel-drive rally car too. Hopefully the tests are on smooth-ish tarmac so we can challenge them.

Will be fascinating to see how everyone approaches this. Looking forward to just meeting everyone and having a nosey around the cars, let alone the drive out.

Funny you should mention the Jubilee ... found an old Jubilee roadbook online so we went out this morning and did page 18 as a practice to see how it works ( Blubberhouses Quarry to Coldstones Quarry - click for map).

Well it was bloody good fun! Adding the roadbook transforms how you approach the drive and makes it much more interesting. It's pretty intense to be honest.

My mate did an excellent job on the notes. We finished with him feeling mildly travel sick and an average speed of 44.5mph (higher than expected largely due to 3 miles on the stupidly straight Sandy Gate/Blake Gate road).

Lessons learnt? Travel sick pills are a must and we need to pace ourselves and not go so full-on for a full day of it. Tulips are straightforward to navigate with on country roads. And I can easily imagine the hard steering wheel rim in the Elise giving me blisters on a full day.

Eeeek it might be a good job they're optional then. I'll be bringing my camera no matter what.

There you go dugsud, as long as you enjoy B roads your 911 should be ideal. I can't imagine its any lower than an Elise?

Looks like there were at least 2 tests planned originally but there is some issue with a double-booking at the auction place? That's a shame but out of their control I guess. I wasn't really expecting more than a couple of tests myself for £30 incl. fish and chips, road book and rally plate - the Bolton Autosolo I'm doing on Sunday is £30 entry for one test site all day.

I've just spotted that the "finals" give the start address as NWA Auctions J36 Rural Auction Centre, Crooklands, Milnthorpe, Cumbria LA7 7FP

BUT, if you just use that postcode in sat nav you'll be stuffed. As per the website I think you'll be better off using LA7 7NU if you don't already know where the place is. It's pretty hard to miss I think.

Oh and I think lunch could be at the Wensleydale Creamery in Hawes.
