CT Rules for used car sale

Could anyone confirm that I'm understanding this right.....

If I buy a used car with a CT that has less than a year left to run, I'll need to get a new one before I can register it in my name?

Sister in France needs an uber cheap runaround and have found a French registered car just returned to Blighty for the right numbers, would save me a lot of hassle if I can make it work but CT expires this year.
