Thanks for all the support and input.

Today they paid for new flights on Sunday, and signed a declaration in front of a judge to say they wouldn’t do anything ‘nasty’.

Could I have kept him, maybe. But I don’t seek animosity and this seems the best resolution for the most important aspect in this - my son.

I'm glad for you and your son that this difficult problem is being resolved, even if ad interim.

Might I humbly suggest that you continue consulting the lawyer you have contacted in case this situation (or a variation on it) arises again? I suspect you probably were going to anyway, but...

Good luck to you both.

Op, I’ve used this fellas services to sort out a few issues. Admittedly not as complicated as your current dilemma. But, what you’re dealing with is very much within his portfolio of expertise.
Also, he’s a bloody decent bloke and a petrol head to boot thumbup

He did indeed. Seem to recall he also had some form of Alfa.
Yup, and nice to see someone else has used him and was happy too.

We’re on our way - unfortunately the custard fell off the wing on takeoff.

Prepare for some G when the pilot pulls out of that vertical dive. Clench your abs, breathe normally, it will probably only be about 2 to 3 G (the wings will likely fall off, but never mind that).

United will fly him alone but I’m extremely uncomfortable with that - he’s 5 and it’s the best part of a 12 hour flight.
Just read through and wish you the best OP. Sounds like a mess frown

but working in the aviation industry, i'll offer the below;

Airlines don't let under 14s fly alone. End of.

Anyone under this age have to pay for an un-accompanied minor service, which they are escorted to the gate, onto the aircraft and the purser is responsible for them, and then upon arrival, ground staff meet the child and escort them to arrivals to an appropriate adult.

He remembers the journeys fondly, and it was his party piece at the time...

While they are 'alone' the purser and the crew are aware of their situation, and they have attention throughout the flight. UMs are not even allowed to sit next to a person of opposite sex. It's heavily regulated, especially in the UK.

It's fairly common, I see this everyday, but i'll admit, not at an age as low as this, usually 8-13.

I hope you work this out, but i'm just here to say that when this is sorted, don't worry about the flight, it's all covered under the UM service.

Of course their emotions I can't cover, leaving a 5 year old away from anyone they know along a 12 hour flight would be heartbreaking, but you have been forced into this situation.
Was going to reply to this... My step-lad used to go to Canaries unaccompanied from the age of 5. He went with BA and they had the whole thing down to a T, even checking ID when passing child over to parent. He had a fabulous time, and undoubtedly bored someone silly next to him about Bristol City on each flight. He was uncomfortable once, when seated next to a Spanish speaker, and they sorted him out swiftly. Before 9/11 so he also got to spend some time in the cockpit.

This is a mega long flight - 10 hours as standard - but today’s flight was delayed by an hour as 3 passengers didn’t turn up - I feel like I’ve been on here forever and we’ve still go two hours to go. I think he’s a while away from travelling here alone even though I’m sure the airlines would look after him well.

Op,

I’m glad you have this sorted, you sound like you have reasonable funds but, are you not concerned that if the mother is prepared to be such a tt when your trying to get your son home, she might be an even bigger tt when you next want to bring him to the UK. Or even refuse you taking him back to the UK.

As part of this stshow she’s had to pre agree in writing to the summer dates.

It’s more than the money anyway - it’s totally totally emotionally draining.

OP, unfortunately I don’t have any decent advice I can give. I’m just messaging to say that having stumbled on this thread accidentally, I’m appalled at the sh!t you and your son have been put through and I really do think that you sound to be handling a very difficult situation very well. Stay positive and good luck with this (easy for me to say, I know). Your son’s probably going to thank you for being there for him when he’s older.

Thanks - I’m just at Austin airport at the moment waiting for the flight - can’t wait to be back.

I’ll be engaging with the the solicitor as suggested with serious considerations for the future.

Don't lose sleep over it. You have everything documented and no judge will see it as your fault if what you say is correct. Surprised the US Embassy won't give him a temporary travel document

Holy Moly thread resurrection.

The amazing rehoming a dog thread - https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&... reminded me how awesome PistonHeads can be, and pivotally changing.

That being said it also reminded me how much this little community helped me at my lowest point - seemingly 4 years ago by the dates on here. And it makes such a difference.

Fast forward to this time now - my ex and I are like besties, we both have our sons best interest at heart and are going on holiday together next week.

A belated thanks for all the help on this thread and various others at that point beer
