There was an article in the Times a while back that was very pro-hornet. It mentioned an occasion when the writer was asked to remove a hornets' nest from a friend's property. As they were quite docile, he picked up the nest, put it in a box, put the box on the back seat of his car and took the nest into a nearby wood.

Without any protection except gloves and without being stung.

In my view the only good thing about hornets is that they are big, so easily spotted and zapped.

We get them fly down our chimneys and into the wood burners. We had the chimneys swept yesterday, so the Mrs. gave the wood burners a quick clean first. 5 dead hornets in one and 12 in the other.

We have a colony near us as we seem them quite regularly and they bang into the windows in the evenings. I think they are cool to see & never had any problems with them. They seem a lot less aggressive than normal wasps.

I found what I thought was a queen hibernating in our log store, tried not to disturb her so hopefully she made it through the winter.
