Renovating and extending my wildlife pond
Discussion
Anything mortar or concrete based should be sealed with a pond sealer, amazing amounts leach in to the water an sends the PH through the roof and makes the water very hard.
When I had an aquatic shop I saw many beautiful ponds fail to keep fish as the builders didn’t know that they had to seal the concrete etc.

I was told recently that on farms in Australia, they put stickleback into the water towered to control mosquito larvae. This came from someone staying on a farm who wondered why there were 'fish in the bath water'.
I have been to a few Caribbean islands where they had guppy’s in the freshwater places to do the same, our old riding yard had goldfish in the water troughs for the same reason and Disney used Tilapia.I used Sticklebacks in our irrigation holding pond, it fills off the guttering and I was worried about mosquitos.
What a satisfying thread to follow. Really great to see the thought processes behind the work. And the steady progress.
Today's pic of the mature pond from Dr Mike is wonderful. I would love that, and a garden !
Kudos to AlexC too. ! Thanks guys - lots of ideas for a future time when I have garden space
