On the side of a house in Devon there is a painted sign about a "Volunteer regiment" but I can't remember where. I know it is in South Devon between Honiton and Newton Abbot, and that it's on the left side of the car as you drive through.

I live in Bath and haven’t seen this! I’ve got quite a few of these signs near me so will post them once I’m home next week.

Unsurprisingly, there's a good twitter account (@ghostsigns) which does a good job of documenting ghostsigns round the country. It's always worth a browse to waste a few minutes

There is a whole FB page and website dedicated to these, I've posted a few on there over the years.
Where I came from they used to bottle the local spring water, then they moved on over the years to doing different things with it and eventually moved on to making 'pop' as it was known. There were a few at it and the names and owners changed over the years, this library of pics has one of them in the background of a few of the pics from different angles over the years: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.19421026...

Finally it became Larkspur before closing. An advertising hoarding was fixed over the last proper painted on sign and it got forgotten for decades. Until it was rented out no longer then it came down to reveal the old sign again. Faded and peeling it looked like an eyesore, albeit an interesting one. The Parish council had it copied and an artist painted it back on again, story and pics here:

Always loved this building, next door to my pals pub in Kemerton, just outside of Bredon.

I drive through Woolhampton every day and have never spotted these! Will keep an eye out. There's a great enamel sign on a house up the road in Hermitage, will get a snap on my next walk in the light. Great idea for a thread smile
The 2nd pic is literally on the A4 rofl

One from my home town, which started life as, it's believed, the first purpose built car factory in the world owned by the Dennis Brothers (who four of my family worked for at various times)

Both are visible from the A4. The Bakery is next to The Angel and the more faded confectioners is near to what was The Falmouth Arms (or the Foul-mouth Arms as it was known in some circles) now a private house.

A couple more of Soton ones. The rather well known as it can be seen from the ferry port Eagle Warehouse (May & Wade) which is now part of a school & Holy Rood Chambers in the same area of town.

Funny I was only looking at that greengrocer the other day while I was stopped at the traffic lights by what used to be Go Outdoors. Must be one of the oldest buildings in the high street. Amazed it's survived so long. There's a couple of similar buildings with the traditional wooden cladding in Strood high street too. Very common in old photos of the area.
