Local Facebook groups
Discussion
Our village Facebook page is usually pleasant enough, although you do get the feeling that a certain element of the users love it for keeping tabs on everything that is going on in "their" village. Curtain twitching for the 21st century...
We do get the usual suspicious looking vans driving around etc. Today we had a fox run over outside somebodies house, another posters response was "how were they going fast enough to kill it??". I'm fairly sure if I drove over a fox at 2mph I would kill it, but it was obviously a reckless speeder...

I was getting bored of Facebook so joined some local Facebook groups. Anyone else done this?
Mine seem to be just full of people complaining about rival local Facebook groups, curtain twitching, seeing suspicious people and reporting damage to cars and loads of other minor criminality.
Sometimes it’s probably best not to know this kind of thing, it’s the sort of stuff that makes old people stay at home reading the daily mail.
There’s also a local sales section which seems to be full of tarts selling worn underwear and tight dresses. That’s not just from me clicking on them either.
Last week in ours one member asked for recommendations on how to deal with long haul air travel. One woman commented saying sit on the left the planes have more legroom on the left.Mine seem to be just full of people complaining about rival local Facebook groups, curtain twitching, seeing suspicious people and reporting damage to cars and loads of other minor criminality.

The one which annoys me is when you ask for a recommendation for a job - painting, plumbing, new front door etc.
What you hope is that a few people come forward with suggestions and maybe evidence of work done.
What happens is you get a couple of dozen single name links to their mate who does a bit 'cash in hand' at the weekends.

Anyone else have chavs selling drawings for £5? Then when people rightly ask if it’s a joke, become victim to verbal abuse from the family and friends of the ‘artist’? This is then followed by people trying to look nice by buying the stty drawing?
Almost! There’s a man in one of the larger town groups (30,000 members) that does pencil sketches, most of which are pretty good. He posted one recently, which was based on one of my friend’s Facebook profiles; a photo of her and her husband on their wedding day a few months prior.
Obviously, I thought she had the sketch commissioned, whereby he was advertising his skills via this latest creation. Unfortunately, her husband’s face looked a bit ‘odd’, so when I next spoke to her, I asked about the picture ...
She didn’t commission it. The ‘artist’ basically chose her FB profile, drew the picture, posted to the town group, then messaged her for payment!
She declined to pay and found the attention/comments to be quite awkward.

Yep, had experience of this. Needs a bit of basic electrical work doing on the car. After the guy left half the interior lights stopped working. Steer clear of FB recommendations IMOWhat you hope is that a few people come forward with suggestions and maybe evidence of work done.

Someone's just asked on our local page "Where's the best place to eat in Horsham and the surrounding areas?"
There will now follow 300 replies in which all of the approximately 107 listed on TripAdvisor, plus every pub within 5 miles, will likely get a review.
I of course have done my usual and referred them to the "cracking little place down the A24, on the junction with the A272" because I believe myself to be a comedy legend, ignoring the fact I'm well into terrible, cringeworthy dad joke territory

Posts in the one I'm in mainly concern missing or found cats and dogs, adverts by nail bars, window cleaners, ranting about nuisance kids, concern for the local vagrant and discussions about planning applications. It provides a 'jungle drums' service within the community so serves a purpose.

Every taxi company in the county will be equally recommended and discouraged.
In most instances I don't understand how people can't just use Google to find out what they want to know most of the time.
Edit, also, crap like this, but:
'I need xxx tomorrow. Looking for recommendations'.
Stop being so fking slack.

They used to be good for local recommendations, but now the recommended are drumming their mates up to reply to posts, so they're good for finding businesses, but not for finding good ones.
We got rid of our cleaner because she was ste, she's the most recommended on our local group, and she still messages my wife asking her to reply to posts!
The most recommended electrician isn't even subtle about it, it's always his wife and relatives that recommend him, all the same surname!
It's all that and lost dogs, there's a guy who posts the road conditions for his drive to work if that's any moisture in the air too, I write enjoy that.
We have a local nutter who was kicked out of the Labour party and is being done by the police for sending death threats to the head of the council, he gets a hard time, but I think he's ace.
If you like this stuff, try following your geocode on Tweetdeck, you can dip into all sorts that I presume people think is private.

Had some corkers on our local one. A slightly dark one was a guy that lived in the village a long time obviously had a tipple one Friday night and named a local man he accused of abusing hin as a boy! There was a big hoo haa over that and it transpired that it was another guy with the same name who happened to be local and a similar age just pure mistaken identity. He was booted from the group pretty sharpish.
The recommendation for a local takeaway, usually accompanied by some woman saying "we always go there, it's lush" etc.
You then use it and it turns out the food is like recycled bin peelings.
You then revisit said woman's FB profile to see something that would be harpooned by the Japanese were it to float in their waters, whose obvious issue is their desired ratio of quantity versus quality. With chips.

I joined mine, and for the last year, i both love and hate looking at it. It's like picking a scab. Such things like:
Do you live in my area?!!!!??- A retired lady complaining that nowhere in the town serves a hot cappuccino.
- Constant missing cats / dogs - they all look the dam same.
- Notifications that the mobile speed camera is about - always gets about 100 comment of people either saying thanks or "you shouldn't be speeding anyways"
- General old vs young "what has happened to the town" type comments.
- People CONSTANTLY asking what taxi service to use, and ALL the local cab companies replying and sometimes sqabbling.
- "Is your <broadband_provider> working? And then complaints about said service that they get ste reception, probably because they have the router locked up under the stairs covered in tin foil.
- People in a certain part of town complaining about no mobile reception, yet at the same time there is a massive thread where people are opposing the erection of a mobile tower in said part of town. Proper NIMBYism.
People are the same everywhere. Their frequent lack of self-awareness is still often surprising.

I got into a right old ding dong argument over local eateries after I suggested that you may want to reconsider frequenting somewhere with a hygiene rating of 1.You then use it and it turns out the food is like recycled bin peelings.

Apparently I should be supporting local businesses and they’re lovely people.
(We won’t mention the casual racism and ‘send them home’ type posts from the same posters who said the restaurant staff were lovely, as I think that would get me banned for life!)
I used to take great sport in winding up people in my local one.
I have the fortune/misfortune to live in a very affluent hertfordshire village... i love the place, but the residents are 95% rich entitled w*****s, this comes though on the village facebook group in spectacular fashion. People complaining about passers by putting a crisp packet in their wheelie bin, complaints about people parking vans outside their big houses, that sort of rubbish.
I left the group a few months back as it just wound me up too much in the end, which was a shame as the odd piece of useful local info would crop up.

Rural Dorset.
Endless, endless adverts.
Occasional useful updates on roadworks.
Little insights into how the other half live. There was a great one with someone complaining the housing association wouldn't come and fit a latch on her side gate, someone just posted a link to a latch for like £4.00 on Amazon and the flaming they got was simply staggering.

Our local group is pretty much the same (I think they all are to be honest) with lots of recommend me this, what time does the bus leave, the local busses are crap, the local busses are brilliant, anyone recommend a good Chinese (difficult when all the local pig ones are st) etc..
The one thing I have noticed having been part of the village group for where I live now and the group for the village I lived in previously - there is always one local nut job who has an opinion on everything, and their opinion (according to them) is never wrong.., the know it all nutter in the current group recently got banned after starting a post about an accident on the main road to the village - the weather had been atrocious and a young girl had clearly aquaplaned off the road - but nope, she had driven past about 30 minutes after it happened whilst the car was being recovered and determined the young girl was speeding - a couple of locals had witnessed the accident and defended the young girl following which it all kicked off..
Our village is expanding all the time too... the “locals” hate the main developer with a passion (there seems to be someone throwing nails and screws out on the local roads that is being blamed on the developer) and posting about how the village isn’t what it used to be since “the new houses were built”.. from what I can work out your house is new if less than 10 years old and people living in said houses are not “locals”
Always good to look through though if you have time to waste.. just for the comedy of some of the content.
