That Pantera looks fantastic, perfect stance with those dished wheels flush with the flared arch, lovely thumbup
It's a handful, especially in anger.

Today's supercars are not.
I can assure you that my 812 is more than a handful when you bury the throttle at anything below 100 mph .

I was going to say, modern supercars can be a handful if you turn off (or sometimes even just slacken) the electronic stability controls.

The difference is that now you have a choice, whereas with the older cars you had to be 'on it' all the time, every overtake an opportunity to get it wrong.

I'm not honestly sure which I prefer.

I remember as a young lad waiting for ages in a hotel car park for the owner of a Countach to come out so I could hear it start and watch it leave.

It was one with a big wing (a 5000S) and the start up theatre I can remember to this day… the whine of the fuel pumps, the whirr of the V12 starter motor before the engine woke up and inevitably flamed out, meaning I got to enjoy it all again!

Absolute peak supercar for me.

I can't ascertain if a diablo will be a case of never meet your idols to me or not but its been a childhood dream.. then now, by the time where I could realistically afford one, the prices hiked up another 100k or so laugh

Not sure the list is truly 6 of the best though. 'obtainable' top 6 - maybe?

Can't help but feel my true bucket list would have a 458 speciale instead of the scud (or an F50), probably a murcielago SV instead of the diablo, an F1 rather than a 765, a Zonda S in there somewhere, a GT2RS and then a final spot up for scraps for something raw and quirky. sigh.

So, I went to a car meet with a friend, this morning sponsored by a local Ferrari club so, of course, tere were many current as well as older Ferraris. There were many Lamborghinis and McLarens but my favorite snapshot of the day was of 3 old 70's cars huddled together, a Maserati Merak, my Pantera, and my friend's lovely 308. Yeah there was an LFA, a Ferrari Purosangue, a McLaren Artura and some other notables, but my favorites were still the "oldies."
Here are a few pics.

Some of these posts, “modern super cars aren’t a handful” “something is a few tenths slower but 10years older so must be better” “chipped bmw140i is the daddy”

Thank you for making me chuckle.

Nice thumbup has to be one of the highest millage out there? Be interesting to hear running costs of such a car over such time/ mileage, assuming may well be in profit with the price of them now?
I looked at one for sale with I think 128k km on the clock in 2014, was for sale for c. 260k Euros at the time. I think owned by an Italian guy who daily drove it from memory. some people do drive them a lot.

This is the guy, unfortunately he passed away hence the car was for sale. It had a spare engine with it too. The highest mileage one I've seen is around 114k miles that Reading see.

.

In terms of costs, it's been expensive, sometimes very expensive. It's had a couple of gearbox repairs, brake rotors, two clutches but over a big mileage and the thrills I've had worth every penny

The CGT, XJ220, Diablo and then LFA. That order for me please. Not fussed about the McLaren and the Ferrari doesn't seem as 'special' amongst this company.

The Pantera is lower than the 308 by a little bit. I didn't really compare to the Merak. Interesting thing about the Merak when I peaked inside. It has two radios, one on the passenger side and the other to the left of the steering column at the bottom of the dash near the door. The Merak with its open buttresses and pointed front hood/bumper has some interesting design cues. My friend's blue 308 with the Stratos gold wheels is going up for sale soon as he has purchased an F355 in the same color combination. The scream from that 355 when the exhaust valves open is bone-chilling, like a wounded wild animal. And I thought my Pantera was loud.

great story Ted about that F355, guess something has changed since it came out the factory with such sound? or is that standard... and ow, same color combo and wheels on such would be lovely as well.

Did that Merak had the Bora dash or the Citroen-ish one, I'm not a fan of the Citroen example in a Merak, the Bora dash looks way cooler to me at least.
2 stereo's? maybe I've seen such or not, can't remember, is it not such 70-tish extra stereo things?

I remember me buying a Matra Bagheera with 4 things for the stereo, also a microphone and tuners and so on hahah, those were the days ;-)

Luckily mine aren’t nearly so expensive.

1. 50s Caterham 7
2. 60s Jaguar eType ( ok expensive)
3. 70s Ferrari 308GTS
4. 90s Lotus Elise S1 111s
5. Modern Aston Martin Vanquish

I’ve made a start with 1 and 4 :-)

The Merak has the radio slot by the drivers door - presumably no self respecting 70's playboy would let his date twiddle with his knobs. Not sure it ever had one on the passenger side as well?

LFA.
Love the orange exterior, although not keen on the Bumblebee cabin. Cabin refit, please - all black.
BTW, I don’t think it’s a Nurburgring Edition?
