f12 - sensible time to buy?

The state of those brake discs suggests that the car has been tracked or abused/clocked. Nothing wrong with the former if priced correctly but check the history for the latter. Insist on a brake wear read-out.
I'd just add that those screws (or whatever they are called) look like the ones on my FF. Half of them fell out on the rear discs and I had to buy new discs, even though the disc itself was perfectly fine. Bit of a painful bill for nothing more than rust - fronts will have to follow eventually - without the rust issue, I think they would easily last 150k km or more judging by my car's mileage Edited by ANOpax on Monday 20th May 13:28

Such a strange ad. A big long lecture on what an F12 is but virtually nothing on the car itself. It’s possible to ask of course but wouldn’t instil me with confidence.
Whereas the private seller advert has absolutely nailed the description.. not much more to do than go see it.. just lazy on behalf of the dealer. Main dealers can probably get away with it as people don’t need much excuses to go look round a Ferrari Showroom but think a lesser known independent should bother a bit more, albeit it sounds like they have a good mechanic. I know where I’m heading….ANOpax said:

What is it about how they look that tells you they’re knackered?Edited by ANOpax on Monday 20th May 13:28
I’ve no idea what to look for to tell on ceramics.

They're not knackered. They're simply showing more wear than they should for the advertised mileage. As they wear, more of the carbon matrix shows through and they start to lose their mirror finish. Once the braking material has worn off, all that's left is the carbon matrix and gaps/holes where the friction material was - see the photo below courtesy of AV engineering for a truly knackered disc..

Thanks.
A question I should have perhaps asked before actually paying for this car but (if you can see well enough in this picture) do you think that these look consistent with a sub-10k mile car?
You're welcome. Difficult to tell from the resolution of the photo but there's nothing there which jumps out to suggest excessive mileage or a tracked car.A question I should have perhaps asked before actually paying for this car but (if you can see well enough in this picture) do you think that these look consistent with a sub-10k mile car?

That cars never been tracked, know the previous owner and everything he has he spends and looks after. If you know you know.
I’ll probably get called a troll now

Nobody said that the Scuderia the disc came off had been tracked. I did say the disc was knackered though and Voicey said 'the disc was toast' I’ll probably get called a troll now
But now that you mention it, I'm surprised that an allegedly fastidious owner would let their brakes get into such a parlous state and delay pad replacement for so long that they were worn down to the studs
Any F12 undecided’s out there.. I luckily own one but 10 yrs later lovely to see this enthusiasm.

well did you go and see it? Absolute stunner in that colour combo, Silverstone and Silver Wheels most are darker Diamond cut wheels but those forged wheels in Silver look great, love the silver wheels on the 992 GT3 too. last week i got a call from the car agent i use regularly.
he wanted to know if i wanted to trade in my Silverstone F12 as the interest in these have spiked recently.
had mine for 2 years now, still love it as on the first day i got her, no chance of me parting with her.
the lines on the F12 just get better with time.

2 more phone calls this week asking if willing to sell… looked into it a bit more, in last 6 weeks, Sytner group sold 5 of their Red cars, 1 left, only had Red cars.. Nick Cartwright, Simon Furlonger and 2 private sellers sold various Grays. Romans sold a Blu Scozia. 10 cars, so yes the market has woken up to the value of F12. Not sure if it’s 12 C related or it’s found it’s sweetspot.
Yes, market is very strong and active for these, if you break down the pistonheads classifieds and take out the TDF and double adverts, only 13 available which I believe is only 3% of the UK market. Also was watching the collecting cars 2014 black one last night, bid to £163,200 with fees, and the better forged wheels had to be negotiated on top, no Ferrari Warranty and was still Unsold!!
