I/We have an early - 2002 - Yaris, which is TC
I/We have a hybrid 2018 Yaris which is whatever it's called.
Just drive 'em. Don't worry about it.
Pre 2005 is TC and fine. Mrs Imck had a 2003. Great car.
Hybrid is ECVT and fine. I have a 2020 Corolla Hybrid

Post 2005 in the OPs budget is multi-mode (automated manual) and best avoided.

Why bother?

Plenty of auto only driving schools.

Worry about sinking 4k and thousands on insurance if and when he passes?

No mention of the Kia Picanto as yet. They use a proper torque converter auto so no CVT/dual clutch complications to worry about. Having said that the auto saps the power and is only a 4-speed so prepare to lose momentum on hills and sit at nearly 4k at 70, but as a town car it's brilliant and nothing whatsoever has gone wrong since we bought ours for the OH when she passed her test nearly two years ago.

In September 2016 I bought a Skoda Roomster DSG with about 50K miles on the clock.
I traded it in last April with about 120K miles on the clock.
Gearbox gave me no concerns during my ownership.
Car appears to still be taxed and MOTd.
I was going to say the same. Ex girlfriend had one and I used to borrow it from time to time.

As an avid auto hater, I thought it drove really well. In London and on long trips. Nearly converted me to auto but then she broke up with me.

Tow of life's (almost) certainties - Cars will break down, and relationships will break up...
