Any thoughts on a used 2018 / 2019 840D? I want a luxurious workhorse to put on lots of motorway miles.

Looks like a lot of car for the money and BMW make great diesel engines.

In your shoes I would try a few alternatives to see what the ride quality is like.

Obvious alternatives for luxury mile munching with a decent torque from a 6 pot diesel would include a Merc S400L, a Jaguar XJ 3.0d, or an A8 3.0 TDI.

I really enjoyed my time with my 840i GC but honestly a 5-series with the same lump will have more room and deliver 95% of the experience for less money. The 8s are great-looking cars though, that's for sure.

Extended warranty prices are insane, I would check them first, you could risk running one without but complex cars repairs not cheap.

I would take one for an extended test drive on familiar roads/routes to make sure you are happy with the ride.
I like the design (colour/trim dependent), nice place to be inside, although feels a little claustrophobic, fantastic drivetrain but you no doubt already know that.
The ride quality is the only reason I've not bought one previously.

Happy shopping!

Cheers,

Chris

Is it also a reference to the 2 litre 4 cylinder diesels which have therefore no bearing on this car whatsoever?

Stunning cars.

I’ve loved them since they were first announced.

At £30k it’s a bargain.

I never did understand why BMW didn't sell the 5 series with this engine here.

This. Try a g30 530d xdrive and see what you think. They ride just fine on passive m sport suspension, get rid of the runflats if you're as obsessive about ride quality as me.... also maybe stay away from 20 inch wheels. Interior is really high quality on the g30, not that different from the 8 series. I had one with cream interior and dark blue metallic exterior, it was the perfect balance of expensive looking but subtle. Shouldn't have sold it frown

We quite fancy one of these too, although as said, check that you'll be happy with the ride though. We had a F13 640d on 20" wheels(runflats), and the ride in that was awful over potholes/broken tarmac.

Great cars, I'd opt for the GC as has a nicer airier cabin feel.

I think the d also has rear wheel steering, which is handy, as they're long and wide, and can be a pain to park in some multi-storey carparks.

The d has much better fuel economy that the i, so suited to lots of motorway driving.

Wheels, if you can get 19" and non-runflats, then the ride is much better.

I don't know that you'd fit 19s over the front calipers, the brakes on the GC were pretty hefty..?

Stunners and love the colour combo as well.

Do these suffer the drive line vibration issues that the earlier 6 series suffered?

Had a low mileage one as a hire car in Spain a couple of years back.

Honestly, I have no idea where the power and torque goes, because it certainly doesn't make it to the wheels.

Definitely try before you buy. I was hugely underwhelmed.

We have an 840d GC x-drive. All the car you need tbh, effortless on the motorway and it's surprisingly good when it's driven spiritedly. I do mixed driving and average 45mpg, could easily imagine nearer 50mpg with some care. Ours has 20 inch wheels and run flats and the ride can be a bit firm, but thats all - a bit firm. Otherwise, its lovely, and full of tech.
