I'm still not clear on why people on here make a distinction between the Duster and every other car derived crossover on the market, as far as I can tell they are pretty much one and the same in terms of ability.
In what sense?MC Bodge said:

Personally I wouldn't own a car with rear drums either - you park up with them warm, then things contract and you find your car has rolled into a hedge.
That is total crap ! Edited by MC Bodge on Wednesday 8th December 09:17
Suffice to say that since then I have left cars in gear on hills.
I never really understood the mentality of someone who buys a dull, no frills a to b car brand new for say £10k?
If you don't care about cars want an a to b car why not buy an old focus for £1k and spend the other £9k on whatever other things non car people buy??
Please someone explain this to me

Manufacturer warranty for the most part.
Scrappage possibly (how my parents got a Hyundai i10 having always run secondhand Astra or Corolla for the previous 20yrs). Hyundai came with a 5yr warranty which ain't half bad really.
Now they have an EV Zoe which I think had some kind of incentive attached.
They are obviously not petrolheads

Dependable.
Reliable.
Latest safety stuff.
Probably lower tax.
Emission zone friendly.
Better fuel economy.
Etc, etc.
Chances are your £1k Focus will be a nail and you’d be lucky to get three years worry free motoring out of without needing some repairs.
There’s a lot to be said for worry free motoring and not fretting if this winter will be the one that finally consigns your Focus to the scrappy.
For me it was a business decision. I was leasing a Transit connect diesel. I decided to get a car but didn’t fancy a tiny little city car and as I spend 8/10 hrs a day in it got an LPG Duster Comfort for a shade over £11k pre reg. cruise, sat nav, rear camera etc etc. In the 11 months I have owned it I have saved between £100 and £125 per week. I have now done 22000 miles since January. I genuinely really like it. My car history is huge with performance cars and classics and also have a RRS. I have a new Defender on order to replace the RRS but the Dacia is staying.

I don't think any current Dacia car is dull, maybe they were ten years ago, and watching this video from a couple of years ago the Duster is made in a state of the art factory:-My son bought a fairly nice Fiesta Ghia for £800 a few months ago, he has already spent 2k getting it through it's MOT etc.
Some people could not care less about cars, they are white goods, but they expect them to start first time, whatever the weather, be comfortable and come with a three year hassle free warranty.
As mentioned earlier I bought a Duster new for not much.
A couple of months ago I bought a very low mileage 20 year old car for £400 off a neighbour. Loads of paperwork, as new condition inside and out, garaged and it had just passed its MOT. A history of all its previous MOTs with no advisories.
Within a day it broke down completely and cost me £700. It needs another £500 of work to make it saleable.
I've bought nails before and it's worked out ok but it's a big risk.
£10500 and I have a brand new car with warranty and breakdown cover. No worries for 3 years and there's not a lot to go wrong, being fairly basic.
And I love it, didn't think I would.

Absolutely loving my Logan Stepway, great value for money, nothing came close! turning out to be one of the most satisfying cars I've ever had. My next car will almost certainly be a Dacia Jogger, and with an luck they will decide to bring over the Dacia electric city car to the UK as it would make an idea city car

Because you've not really thought this through. If you don't care about cars want an a to b car why not buy an old focus for £1k and spend the other £9k on whatever other things non car people buy??

I never expected to spark such an interesting debate.
I suppose thinking about it, my disappointment comes from the fact that I was expecting a cheap but robust car.
Rubber flooring, lack of toys but a durable feel. It didn’t feel durable. It felt quite lightly built. My FIL is a Geordie and he used a Geordie word to describe it, “Femmer” which means fragile feeling, not robust not durable.
As to why he was thinking about buying new, he wanted a warranty, hassle free routine servicing etc.
It’ll be interesting to see if the nearly new Kadjar lives up to his expectations. I hope it does because car shopping with him is a challenge.
As an aside, my MIL - who doesn’t drive an who has zero interest in cars - demonstrated a surprising car knowledge. She knew what an Audi TT was and even asked me if I fancied a full-size Discovery rather than my Discovery Sport. I think I’ll take her to the local Bentley dealer and drop some hints! :-)

I know what your FIL means, the doors and handles feel lightly built, the sun visors are flimsy, the plastic dash is hard.I suppose thinking about it, my disappointment comes from the fact that I was expecting a cheap but robust car.

But once you drive it all this pales into insignificance. It drives quite well, seats supportive (for me anyway) punchy midrange, soft suspension, high seating position, light steering. Everything works as it should, nothings broken, fallen off or deteriorated. And you keep reminding yourself it cost less than £11k (pre reg bought unseen earlier this yr)
All for the price of an Aygo.
Originally we thought of replacing Mrs 23s i20, purchased new for £8k 2014. Have you seen the price of them now?
