I think the technical term for those tyres is shagged! I’m not surprised you had a moment in the wet.

Yes Sam, and I definitely pushed my luck with them for certain.

I'm back mobile again in it now, and it is really nice to see some tread back on the tyres again. I'm also pleased that I haven't put a hole in the underside of the car with the trolley jack, or ripped the exhaust off or something by accident either, because I'm not exactly renowned for my car DIY skills in fairness! hehe

My wheels are still desperate for a refurb, so that will be next on the agenda I think.

Post No.6 here Lee: https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/showthread.php?p...

437Ms refurbed in platinum silver (full powdercoat); they look stunning and they'd suit your car to a tee IMO cool

Yes Dan, and I always think of you when it comes to platinum silver. coolthumbup

Plus I'm generally a really big fan of silver wheels anyway. Diamond cut wheels certainly need banning as you say!

I tell you what I did notice while I was changing the wheels, was how heavy they were, and that surprised me a fair bit to be honest.

Yes Ross, and they really spoil the car for sure, and I should've sorted them out ages ago. I've had the car 3 years now, and they only looked decent for about 6 months. As soon as the car went through its first winter in my hands, they just started corroding like mad after that.

They'd been given a cheap refurb at the AUC dealer that I purchased the car from I reckon. I noticed overspray on the wheels the first time that I washed the car, so I knew straight away then.

That'll be the tyres; the 437Ms are forged and c9-10kg each; that's light for a 19" wheel

The 405Ms I've just had refurbed are only 9kg a corner as they're forged; the 397s I've got on currently are nearly 14kg a corner; wheel only, no tyre! eek

Although weights like that are light to me due to my stupid antics of lifting big, heavy things biggrin

Definitely need to sort those wheels Lee; a nice bright, painted silver is in order I reckon. Will look great against the SMB.

I didn't realise that they were forged thanks Dan. thumbup

I've got forged 19" wheels on the 370Z too.

I'm definitely not the strongest bloke in the world that is for sure Dan, so I definitely noticed it more than most would I think. I'm ok in terms of cardio(I can run and I enjoy using a Peloton exercise bike every week), but I've never done much in terms of strength though.

I'll be honest and say, that after reading the last few posts, (and seeing the tyres!), I think it's blessing you ended up with the screw, forcing your hand to change them.

A couple of unwritten rules I go by.

Best/grippiset tyres, should always be on the rear of the car. Equally important on FWD too. Over steer is dangerous, and should be on purpose, not by surprise, tyre imbalance is not the way.

Never go into a UK winter on tyres lower than 4-5mm. If we're going to run high performance summer tyres all year, we need to be sensible to a point, 4mm is the recommended minimum for winter tyres.

Getting "your monies worth" out of tyres is a false economy, you would never be able to sell the car with such low tread, and so it's best to change well before you are legally obliged.

Lastly, brave of you using that jack! Worth the ~£50 for a trolley jack and axle stands smile

I bet your car will feel bloody amazing again now, hopefully you'll enjoy it again, whilst deciding what to do next smile.

Thanks Duncan. smile

I did have a small trolley jack on the other side of the car, and I had a couple of small axle stands at the rear of the car as a back up. However...I'm a bit of a stress head though, so I was expecting the worst to happen really!

I put my foot down yesterday a few times(granted the weather had warmed up a lot too at 15 degrees though), and the car did feel great. The current plan is to keep the car for another year I think, and then swap it for a G82 M4 xDrive all being well.

Sorry, I missed that you had axle stands, and it sounds like an exciting plan car wise! smile
