My new wheels have arrived! But unfortunately it looks like I'll have a long wait before I can get new tyres and get the wheels finally fitted due to the lock down (stay safe everyone!)

What's going on with the exhaust manifold, is there a turbo as well?

Wonderful car, can't recall the last time I saw an Acclaim on the road though growing up I remember a yellow/part rusted one on the street where my grandmother lived.

Good thread, learnt to drive in one of these identical to yours, not an Avon, but an HLS Acclaim in the same colour,

Never knew this existed, always good to discover a new strain of eyebrow-raising exotica (unxotica?) on PH. The wheels look just right, good luck with the project.

Correct alloys (Kiwi Lineas) now fitted with new Avon tyres. Also fitted a set of NOS Unipart driving lamps.

Unipart driving lamps, phwoar smile

Slight diversion - many aftermarket lamps had covers as do these. Did anyone actually take them off and use the lamps?

You don’t take them off as they may get broke then the spotlights will be useless, however if you leave the covers on they will remain in perfect condition but you can’t use them because the covers are on!
That was my thinking back in the 80’s anyway.

Great car, never heard of the Avon turbo conversion.

Relatively amusing story - i fitted 2 sets of these to my Acclaim (as was fashionable at the time - i guess). Driving out of Southampton one evening, i had all manner of people putting on foglights, flashing, shouting obscenities at me. I couldn't understand the fuss, as i wasn't using high beam therefore my powerful and manly lights couldn't have been on.

Alas, i had installed the relay upside down and where it was constantly getting wet. It had filled full of water and i had been driving around for days with these lights melting the eyes of anyone withing 50 meters of me.

Yep; my old Cortina had Hella 181s as fogs, & Hella 500s spots (I think) as "driving lights", ie they came on with main beam. (On a Cortina? I know, on there when I bought it!). The fogs always had the covers on, but the spots never, as they were actually quite handy after dark.

Thanks all for the lamp chat. Good anecdotage smile

My father had a pair (oo er) of additional lamps handed down from his father. Well before rectangular or covers were even a twinkle in their designer's eye. Whenever a "new" family car came along they were ritually removed from the old and fitted to the new. The fog had a separate switch, the spot was wired into the main beam circuit.
I can remember them on Morris 1000 Travellers, Mk1&2 Cortina estates and lastly mum's Imp on which I learnt to drive. I fitted them to the Imp.

OP: "I'd like to order some Avon tyres, please."
Tyre guy: "But sir, we can do you far superior tyres, and often at a lower cost."
OP: "All the same, I'd like some Avon tyres, please."
Tyre guy: "The other problem is that I can't get them for about three weeks. I could have you some Toyos today."
OP: "You don't understand. See, I NEED Avon tyres."
Tyre guy: "Why?"
OP: "My car is not a Triumph Acclaim Toyo Turbo. It is an 'Avon Turbo."
Tyre: "Pardon?"
OP: "My car is called a Triumph Acclaim Avon Turbo. That's the name."
Tyre: "What's a Triumph Acclaim?!"
OP: "A car that I own. Kinda like a Honda, but not. Very few left."
Tyre guy: "Is it any good?"
OP: "Not especially, but it's very rare. And I love it. So, could I have some Avon tyres?"
Tyre guy: "Even though they're worse, more expensive, and take longer to source than this list of tyres I have on my computer screen?"
OP: "Yes. I'm not passing up on this opportunity."
Tyre guy: "You must love that old banger!"
OP: "Shut up, you drive a 118i with sick rimz an stretch tirez fam. I've seen your Insta...#th0m4s"
Tyre: "Fight you."
OP: "After you've ordered my tyres. Avons, remember."

This may, or may not have taken place. Wheels look good though! biggrin
