A mate of mine had a very similar thing with his 335d. BMW replaced turbos and a gasket or two and the issue persisted. A full strip down then took place at BMW and I believe it was a cracked piston ring on one of the cylinders that was the culprit. This was replaced and the car then used virtually no oil from then on.
Interesting thanks

Op here just took a call from bmw. So if they do this that and the other ie take off Turbo's etc and they find nothing its down to me which could be £2500 plus so I am going to have to live with it. As they say in 2024 it is what it is

I can check, but i'm sure a former BMW tech I know has seen stripped 35d engines where the rings had "lined up" thus letting oil through. Not enough oil to visually show from the exhaust as it was burning off.

I'd imagine that both lined up and/or cracked damaged rings are rare though.

Give a 5w40 oil a try next time you change the oil. You can get 5w40 in the correct LL04 spec, so absolutely fine to use. It won’t fix the issue but it may reduce the oil consumption and make it easier to live with.

Thankyou, funny enough mentioned this to the tech ,he said dont do it ,in the future you dont want to give BMW a reason to invalidate your warranty ,but you are pointing out it is in the correct spec !!! ....

I have a variant of the 35d M57 in my 2009 635d. It can use 0.5ltr - 1.0ltr between services but its high miles (250,000 miles) and gets a service every 3 months / 4500-5000 milees, so i keep an eye on it. I partly put this down to it being older and higher mileage but wouldnt have expected it from a low miles example. I previously had 2007 635d, used no oil, and then a 2012 640d which was around 100k miles, again used about 0.5ltr over 4000 miles.

OP again, just purchased Forte oil fortifier ,will stick that in 2 bottles it seems, see how it goes. Mind you at the moment oil is at the top so I am worried about adding and going into overfill yellow warning.

It is a PITA I do about 400 miles a week and love this car. The curtesy car was a 73 320i and I found it hard work ,the steering, the suspension ,the idrive smartphone. The darkness of the inside. I just have no idea what I can replace my car with cream interior and sunroof ,it is so light in there such a nice place to be. BMW want over £40k for that new 320i .

I looked around the used cars at the dealership, all so bland for the money they want. Been with BMW for 17 years just cannot see me getting another one just too expensive and merrrgh looking I was behind a convertible E46 the other day silver hood down in the sun and it really looked great.

5W40 is approved by BMW for use in the N57 engine, so ignore the BMW tech. Try Fuchs Titan GT1 5W40 Flex 3 XTL. I use it in my 330d and it uses zero oil between changes. The 'XTL' bit is an oil consumption additive to protect the DPF from ash build up.

Fuchs are a well known German brand, so don't be put off by the low price and relatively unknown name in this country.

Piston rings do indeed rotate when the engine is running, which partly explains good and bad days with engines when they line up temporarily on one more cylinders, but they should never stay "lined up" permanently. That would indicate the piston ring(s) is jammed from excessive carbon or poor workmanship at the factory.

I would sell the car personally. £2500 diagnosis fee is too much for ifs, buts and maybes. The multi-turbo N57s are more notorious for oil burning, so maybe drop back to a 30d again? The performance difference isn't huge imo.

Fuchs have been around a long time; very decent oils. Always used Fuchs in my JDM Honda's back in the days etc

£30 for 5l is dirt cheap! Well worth buying IMO

Pro S is an excellent oil. I used to use that back in the day when it was called Silkolene Pro S. I used it exclusively in a rebuilt engine and after 60K miles, it still looked like new internally. So ever since, I've always stuck with Fuchs. Proof is in the pudding as they say.

Just thought I'd mention it as most people are more familiar with Castrol, Millers, Shell, Mobil etc. The BMW/Shell 0W30 they use now is horrible. So much more blow by haze from the oil filler cap after a run compared to the Fuchs 5W40.

I get 20 litre cartons of GT1 Flex 3 for £98 and just do interim oil changes with a Pela sucker. BMW have made oil changes very easy on the diesels biggrin Unlike on my old Golf where I had to jack the car up to get the oil filter off, grrrrr.
