The cold killing lead acid belief comes from the CCA being drastically reduced at cold temperatures.
I dunno. I came back to my battery one year after forgetting to bring it inside and it had blown up like a balloon. hehe It was a lead acid that had frozen solid at -25C

I will always get Lithium to replace any lead acid, just for the weight savings alone, which are huge. Plus they just seem so much stronger to crank on a cold morning.

Bob,

Canada cold isn't 'normal' cold hehe
For reference, the cold cranking amp value is 0F or -18C and dictates the amount of current the battery shall supply for a set period without dropping below a certain voltage (typically 7.2 v i think)
The issue is modern engines need more than a cranking voltage. The volts need to hold higher for ecu, fuel pump, injectors etc and even if the engine cranks, there may be insufficient voltage to drive the spark and fuel components.
Additionally, modern engines are far tighter than when the CCA standard was created and at cold, the engine can be partially seized resulting in a far bigger current being required to get the engine starting to turn from rest.. And as batteries are a chemical reaction device, cold is always going to slow the reaction down...
Re the subject, I posted about the Li Ion battery in my beta 390 going flat and refusing to recharge. Changed it to an Antigravity with the correct Optimate rated chargers and no issues, even when it went to -15 in my garage over winter...
