I'd much rather queue in Costco for fuel, the queues soon die down as you haven't got people going into the kiosk to do their shopping or have a pee.

I used to have business membership so could get in early at Thurrock. Then I started using Sunbury and it was bliss in the mornings - possibly the quietness one I've been to.

The tyres are worth the membership though, and the fitters are excellent.
Tyres are definitely a bonus but the offers are time specific. I've found a tyre supplier in Enfield that does cheap PS5/Primacy4 (no fitting, but I have 2 local places happy to fit) available all year around. But don't get me started on Costco tyre appointments, constant lateness and their way or no way (new tyres to the rear - which whatever the argument I politely disagree with).

Good to hear they insist on new tyres to the rear.

Which is fine in general. Try turning up wanting new front tyres for a car with staggered widths and see the confusion erupt! biggrin

Had that. Took the intervention of the store general manager and me signing a waiver to get them fitted - if they hadn't already started before they relaised I'm sure they'd have refused to do it.

The handbook of the Merc I had at the time actually says if fitting only a pair of tyres put them on the front!

Costco US will rotate wheels free (keeping tyres evenly worn is a big thing in the US) but here they won't do it even if you pay.

Never been to a Costco, I have a Makro card which I use occasionally for a bit of bulk buying, normally only a dozen or so people in there when I go.

Is there a difference bteween the two?

Very similar experience in the Reading branch.

They opened the fuel station recently (last year I think). The queues on a work day lunch start at around midday. At the weekends queues for fuel reach the A33 (700m, I just measured it!). They had to close off some of the links in the carpark due to poor planning and not anticipating how much chaos it would cause.

Inside is much, much busier. 11am used to be ok but is now busy - so I go evenings as well.

One difference is the satisfaction guarantee at Costco, vs Makro where they basically told us to get stuffed, and pointed out they're not a retailer, so normal consumer protection laws don't apply to them.

Therefore have not been into a makro for some time - last time I did (Queensferry, nr Chester) it seemed very run-down - some of the food looked decidely ropey, like it had been there for ages, and there were a lot of gaps. It looked like it was about close down. I just looked and it's still there, and recent Google reviews look OK (there's only a few though).

Are you allowed to wander around a Costco without a membership at all, I just fancy a gander!? smile

Interested to see what their OLED tv pricing is like.

No.

But if you know someone with a membership they can take you along.

Makro is targeted at PBU's - Personal Business Users..You have to have proof of a business to get a membership card. Part of Booker/Tesco, they sell wholesale stuff and stuff that appeals to PBU's - stuff like a 99" barbeque cum TV (I made that up, but hopefully you get my gist!) biggrin

They used to piss about with model numbers so you couldn't compare against Currys etc. Not sure if that's the case still..

The extra £5.99 for online grocery delivery annoys me. I could understand it for perishables with a short shelf-life that have to be kept cool and arrive quickly, but it covers things like bin liners and washing powder too.

Also for some reason Kirkland coffee beans aren't grocery but all other brands are.

It can be cheaper in store. I bought a 65” LG C3 tv about a year ago, from memory I paid £1200, it was over £100 more online. I just had to fit the fker in my car to get it home, it only just went in!

I think your memory might be playing tricks on you as one of those rarely dips below £1500 even now a year after launch biggrin (see above image)

Probably a C2 65" ?

I can’t stand the place. Finally joined this year when the Leeds one opened a petrol station and the prices were too good not have a look.

Not sure if it’s specifically the Leeds one, but the one way car park baffles 99% of people and when they get out of their cars they just all walk down the middle of the road. Once inside it’s chaos. Whatever time of day you go, it’s full of large families who have taken everyone from grandparents, the six kids to an uncle with a milky eye. No idea why the kids are not in school.

Then you have the comically oversized trolly to navigate past the family reunions constantly stoping without notice. Then For some reason the middle of the shop is filled with tat and thrown together by someone who thinks sports direct is too well organised.

By the time I’ve tried to work out if the brand named stuff I would normally buy is any cheaper in ten times the size packs (hasn’t been once) I’m fed up and ready to leave.

So since joining I have been in the shop three times and each time given up on making a token purchase. The closest I came was trying a kg of steak. But it wasn’t organic and was about the same price as the organic steak I normally get elsewhere. So the MASSIVE queue to get out didn’t seem worth it.

I will say I have been to a few get together were sandwich and cake platters from Costco have been served. If you wanted a cheap platter of sandwiches or cakes I think they are better than M&S made to order on taste and price.

So just petrol for me, but I’ve only bothered with that once. The machines don’t take contactless payment for fuel and I don’t carry a bank card.

I won’t be renewing my membership at the end of the year.
