Hi,
I have an Airfix model of the new Shannon class lifeboat on order. I'd like to change the name and number to match the local boat. How would a novice like myself do this please.
Thanks

You'll be painting it and putting on the lettering and numbering. You need to acquire some decals in the right font and size.

Does this help?

Do you have an inkjet printer?

You can print your own decals...but you'll need to be reasonably nifty with Photoshop or similar.

What choices does the kit provide?

I recently bought the older (and not so good) Severn Class lifeboat kit and it comes with individual letters to allow all the Severns that were in service around 2006-08 to be depicted.

What is missing are all the individual name plates for each boat.

You can't print white decals on a standard inkjet printer.

Do a Google search for:

Xtradecal X32022

or find something similar. That should do it at least for the hull numbers.

Reading the 'rumourmonger' subforum on Britmodeller, it sounds like Airfix might bring out an additional decal sheet containing all the alternative names & numbers. If Airfix don't then someone likely will, as there seems to be quite a demand...

Really like that so have pre-ordered one as well. Haven't built a model since my teens so looking forward to it. I know what'll happen though. I'll spend lots of money on tools, airbrushes, etc. Make a mess of it and retire everything to a drawer. Must think positive smile

You can get white decal paper and then print a box the same colour as the base you put the decal onto, with white lettering in the box (that doesn't then get anything printed of course).

(Assuming you can't get numbers etc in the same font/right size, as matching colours is tricky).

I didn't even realise Airfix had released a Shannon lifeboat. Will have to get one now as I got married at the RNLI College a couple of weeks ago and had quite a few photos with a Shannon class as a backdrop.

At first I thought it was a shame it was only a starter/beginner's set, and so won't have as much detail as the "full" sets. On second thoughts though, it makes them much more accessible, and I imagine every RNLI gift shop will be selling them. Ideal for holidaymakers on wet days!

Hopefully the paints you get aren't the colours advertised on the packaging biggrin

Airfix do a cracking kit of the Severn class as well in case you did not know.

Once the Shannon is out if anyone needs a detail pic of anything (doubtfull looking at the kit pic) let me know smile

This month's Airfix magazine has a "first build" article on the Shannon which contains some useful detail pictures of the real thing.

Not cheap but a cricut machine would allow you to design your own adhesive transfers in the correct font size etc.
