A3- Oil too full warning.

Sons two year old A3 has come up with “oil to full” warning.

Was serviced a month ago and warning just appeared today. I’m guessing it isn’t too full or it would have appeared before now. Can it be reset?

Not sure if it has a dipstick but will look later.

Checked dipstick and it does look a little over, although car leaning a little to left.

Any ideas other than take it to a garage to take some out?

Oil suction syringe from amazon/ebay etc. will be <£20. Will let you pull a bit from the dipstick tube.

Thanks- warning has gone off today so will keep an eye on it. Shouldn’t be over filled as service was done a while ago.

This sounds like the issue my work has been having with Caddy and Transporters. I take it your sons A3 is a TDI?

I believe it is all to do with how the DPF regen works and if it gets interrupted or the engine gets turned off midway through a cycle (not helped at all by having no light telling you a regen is happening!). Don't quote me on this as there's probably more to it but its what has been mentioned to me when the "reduce oil message" issue is reported.

The error message on the dash will (for 50-60 miles) go away after opening and closing the bonnet to reset the oil sensor.

No idea if its certain TDI engines or all of them. Our place can't get them into the dealer as there is a silly 2-3 month wait though they probably don't have a fix anyway.....

Thanks- I’ve read about the TDi issue but his is a petrol.

Oh right....I think the petrol engines have a GPF? Lets hope VAG have designed it better than the diesels!

I'd probably check the level cold and warm to see where it sits and go from there. Hopefully the dealer/garage didn't simply overfill it.

If the oil level is rising over time, fuel is getting into the sump. Does the oil smelly petroly?

If it's an FSI engine, the high pressure pump seals can shrink over time and allow fuel to leak down into the sump.

It’s not three years old yet- seems to have gone away now so we’ll just keep an eye on it.
