I'd like something very small with a tiny engine that I can throw around country lanes and drive to the shops. My wife won't drive a manual so it has to be auto. It needs four seats because the kids will sometimes be in the back, and cruise control is for occasional 30-50 mile trips.

Given the budget, I'd like it to have decent parts availability.

I'm thinking something from Japan/Korea is most likely to fit the bill. C/C as standard would be perfect, or with the possibility to retrofit using an OEM stalk; I've done this before on a Porsche 996.

If your max journey is 50 then an early Leaf would be ideal.

They take the miles really well and the 30kWh version will do a genuine 90 miles.

I ran one for 93k miles over 3 years as a commuter and had zero issues.

ETA The Teka spec comes with heated front and rear leather, heated steering wheel, 360 camera & reversing camera and CC as standard.

I suspect you're going to struggle with very small, auto (which means expensive and quite possibly automated manual, not torque converter), cruise control (rare, often only on top spec or perhaps recent small cars, hence expensive) and £5k. All I can think of is something like this Smart Forfour, or its Renault Twingo sister: https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202405049...

You may well find that, as suggested above, a larger EV is better value and much more likely to come with cruise control.

Small automatic cars are the most in demand type of car out there, you are really going to struggle to get anything half decent for £5K

If you go for the next segment up you'll get exactly what you're looking for & they're better value.

Thanks, these are all good ideas. I was leaning to Toyota Yaris/Auris/Prius and that's probably where I will end up.

Fair enough - I'll add it to the shortlist.
