Cleaning out my inspection pit prior to giving the covering timbers a coat of preservative I came across this metal pipe sticking out of the brickwork, a 90 degree bend facing downward. Any idea what it would have been for? Maybe it leads to a vent outside and it is there to get rid of any fumes from spilt oil or petrol?

Difficult to say without a picture.

My thoughts went to maybe a hard line for compressed air in the pit. The pipe running somewhere above adjacent to where a compressor was located.

Pic of said pipe, probably 1 1/4’’ od if the rust wasn’t there, located about 6’’ down from the garage floor.

It's a breathing tube for when the pit fills up with noxious fumes.

That looks very like an old black iron water pipe. Was there perhaps a tap -- or maybe a point to connect a hose with an isolation point somewhere else?

Dispensing pipe?
