Madison Square Garden? Ground Zero if you want? Soho? I hear that the Tube system is a bit of a nightmare but great when you get the hang of it.

I've never been but Iria has been a couple of times - mainly checking out the museums etc (for free I think?)

No doubt she will be along when she wakes up (time difference) to add a few more ideas.

Check out the Gugenheim (spelling?), its an astonighing building and they have awesome collection of paintings - you start at the top and spiral your way down.

Tribecca area is good for cafe culture and restaurants.

Didn't bother going up the Statue of Liberty as the queues were horrendous - did a round trip on the Staten Island ferry instead, you can get some good shots of the staute from there (if that's your thing).

All IMHO of course.

Have fun, its excellent in the winter but wrap up warm those icy winds are very cold.

Times Square... if you dare go into Toys r Us I do reccomend the Metropolitan museum... nice collections, amazing view from the garden on top of it. Walk around Madison and 5th, ehmmmm... cannot think of more. Metro day ticket is quite worth it, try not to get lost though, careful with the different letters in each metro train, they stop in different points of the same line

be prepared for a cold cold cold season

and have fun!

Went a few years ago, and loved wandering around the Lafayette Street region - lots of little delis, cafes and cool shops - fab Stussy shop there!

Do the Staten Island ferry - great views, and the Empire State Building - again great views.

Have a look in the shops - so much cheaper - especially designer gear.

We found the underground fine - no problems at all, but at one time did wander out of the 'safe' area as designated by the guide books, and found it a bit intimidating (two girlies, and a few 'gangs' about) in the early hours after going to a bar.

We had a fabulous time - and I love the place. Have loads of fun - I'm really jealous!

I just got back from New York on Wednesday and it is very cold and snowing! Its a geat city though and theres loads to do. I would recommend the 'Circle Line' boat trips, they last about 2 hours and go right round the Statue of Liberty and all round Manhattan under the Brooklyn Bridge, etc. I would go at night too as it looks really good all lit up and you don't get loads of crowds! Also if your gonna do the Empire State building I'd go up at night aswell as there are no ques, in the day you'll be queing for hours! The globe that was outside the World Trade Center is in Battery Park now, not much to really see but its quite moving! On Canal Street theres loads of nice shops and you spend far too much money (well I did anyway!) The Underground can be very confusing but is probably the easiest way of getting around. Well I'm rambling now, you'll have a great time whatever you do

I love New York, been a couple of times now, we went once in the summer and once in the winter, the second time we got snowed in, they closed all the airports and we had to stay an extra 4 days.

To do

Guggenheim, do if you have the chance.

Metropolitan need a good day here to see everything, so if you are only on a short visit probably best to give it a miss.

Empire state, well you just have to

I agree about the statue of liberty, get the circle line instead, you still get some good views of it and you also get to see the manhattan skyline, although unfortunately not as striking since they no longer have the WTC.

Grand Central station is worth a view for the ceiling (have you seen the fisher king?)

I wouldn't bother with Chinatown or Little Italy but Greenwich Village I enjoyed, it has some good themed pubs.

I am so jealous, I want to go again now.

Enjoy

I'd second Mrs Fish about Grand Central Station. Its worth a visit as is Central Park, although what that is like is winter I have no idea. Probably like Home Alone 2. We went to the UN building which is quite cool.

I agree with everyone else about the Statue of Liberty - just go and look no point going onto the island. However the museum on the next island that details what happened to new arrivals to America is quite worth a look.

Empire State building is a must.

Hope you have a great time - I too am very jealous as I really want to go again!

Budget on about $60 for the cab ride to your hotel room near central park from newark...

Went at the end of October this year and had a brillant time.

Recomend:

Empire state building Dusk - fantastic sunset!
5th Ave for great shopping
Times Square - manic!
Brooklyn Bridge, great views of manhattan.

Do use the Subway it is clean safe and simple once you get used to it. We even had Americans coming up to us and asking us which way to go

Newark is a while away from the city i think. But there should be a train directly from outside the airport and then you can take the underground. Mind you, if you are going to the Excelsior, you can as well take a taxi or ask if they have some kind of shuttle bus for their customers.

I second a visit to the Carnegie hall Deli and if If you go to Grand Central have some clam chowder in the Oyster bar downstairs.

The view isn't quite what it was but still spectacular from the Rainbow Room in the Rockefeller Center. You can drink Martinis and if it's snowing the air currents from the street blow the snow upwards. Surreal, especially after you've had a few, to watch Manhattan twinkle before you at night.

I flew to Newark and you pay no more than $40 basic but then you have to pay tolls and also tip! It cost me $50 total, I think if you pay anymore than this your starting to get ripped off! Thats another thing I found that New Yorkers are either really nice to you or they will try and rip you off as they can see you haven't quite got the hang of the money, etc, so just don't let them do it!

I personally think China Town is a must! My friend got a personal cd player for $10 last year and its still working! Theres alot of crap agreed but if you look carefully then you'll get some bargains!

See the "Strawberry Fields" mermorial site in Central Park, near the Dakota building where John Lennon was shot in 1980.
