Right.

I have noticed quite a lot of people have been getting frustrated trying to drive these cars, which are admittedly bloody difficult to keep on the track. As such, this post is meant as a bit of help and not chastisement.

I think, like anything worthwile, it's hard to initially persevere with these cars because they are not easy. A lot of people are saying that they are reminded of GPL by the 79 mod, GPL was also very frustrating but ultimately great.

I've driven the 79 cars for about 2 hours over the last 2 and a half days, initially I couldn't drive them at all and was getting very frustrated. TOnight is the first time they have "clicked" and now I can drift the ferrari around copse at silverstone! I couldn't see how it was even possible to drift these cars on saturday.

The way to learn with them is to take is steadily and slowly and make sure you keep it on the track, for the whole lap, every lap. Don't worry about lap times as they come with time. Focus on being smooth and being very gentle with the throttle.

As you spend more time in them you will get better and better without really trying it. Even just driving them for 15 minutes and then coming back to them the next day really helps, you get better overnight without trying!

As for the server, I think for the time being we should look for some cars that a fun to race and that everyone can enjoy and race - there is no point having the 79 F1 cars on the server when only 2 of us (not including myself in that two ) can keep them on the track long enough for a race.

stopping now as this is beginning to sound like one of those weird self esteem building casette tapes.

keep trying! the cars are great and worth it eventually

I was OK with them at Kaylami yesterday (although off the pace a bit) but Silverstone is such a fiddly circuit it just wasn't enjoyable.

Still prefer "fun" rather than "challenge" though!

Incidentally, this is why I stopped playing GPL... maybe I give up too easily but it's quite disheartening to see Ian and FWD 30 seconds/lap quicker than me.

I know what you mean adam. It took me about 2 years of GPL to be able to race with FWD, pv, diver, badboy and RobF... i was so slow at the beginning. I think if you can drive the cars in GTL though, you can drive the 79 F1s... just a matter of practice.

The trick might be to find people to race with of the same standard as you... which we largely have here it's just that if you can't keep it on the track you can't race

How about allowing medium traction contol & low ABS on the server for a while until people get used to the cars ? Short shifting out of corners can help, I think it's the massive power band which is catching people out on these cars. Also make sure you lift the throttle on an upshift, if you don't match the revs it can get really squirrely

I've been racing GPL since the demo came out in 97 which has probably helped me get the hang of the 79's reasonably quickly, however the 1st time I drove one I swapped ends just pulling out of my pit garage.

I stayed up nearly all night playing that with a mate years ago. Brilliant fun

We could try the Kart mod for rFactor, that would be a fun mod. I have both the Superkart and the Kart Racer mods and the Rotax Karts (only one gear) in Kart Racer are fun around the tracks in the track packs for it. yes

www.rfactorcentral.com/detail.cfm?ID=Kart%20Racer

It's hard to spin a 1 gear kart accelerating

We might have to turn off the damage though, just a clip on the scenery and there are wheels everywhere!

What game is this for?

This forum is for all computer games is it not? Prehaps including the game title in the thread name would help get some more responces and help those who dont have your chosen game (whatever it is) aviod the thread. Just a thought.

Mario karts is cool. About the only nintendo game I ever enjoyed (4 player battle on the N64 yes )

Fair point, amended.

I think his comments are squared at me - I came online last night, squirelled about a bit (a lot), ended up in the scenery, and gave up.

GTL was more accessible with its handling, although to go really quick was hard.

I will get there but I might have to tinker with my accelerator settings ala TVR to lower the sensitivity...

not just you Neil - it's something I've noticed in lots of people, including myself, over time, first with GPL and now with this. I just wanted to try to encourage people to persevere, to say that it's not impossible to drive them fast. essentially my motivations are selfish because I want people to race against

I tried the rF3s last night too, they are good and not too hard to handle (a bit snappy). Maybe we should give them a go?

I don't think the 79mod cars are any more difficult to handle than a GTR Ferrari 550 or a GTL Pantera, both of which can swap ends quickly if you try to accelerate too fast too soon. You just need to give them a lap, maybe two to get heat in the tyres and you have more grip. Mike, that's what the tyre colours are, blue cold, to red hot, too high and you'll be spinning them as they will overheat and give less grip.

so red is optimum temp? I'm seeing about 110 degrees after a few laps... I assume that is right, and they're not overheating by the time they get to that temp?

Sounds about right, tyres operate at high temperatures. Try a few donuts to get the temps really high then try to drive the car, you'll be spinning more times than a Labour party politcal broadcast.

Pass.............

I was thinking the same thing, limit it to 4-5 people and the lag should be ok (test it first) so that if a few want to try out something new online quickly.

Just been doing a little offline back to back testing with the Renault and Ferrari at Cadwell Park. Seeing if there was any difference between the two.

Well, no...........well very little I did 1m15.4s laps in both of them, the only difference being it took longer to get the Renault down to that time than the Ferrari. Used the default setup apart from 4th & 5th gear lowered for the shorter straights and +2 added to front and rear wings on both cars.

Ferrari - www.mercia.biz/rfactor/Cadwell-Fer79-FWD-1m15-4s.Vcr
Renault - www.mercia.biz/rfactor/Cadwell-Ren79-FWD-1m15-4s.Vcr

I'll have a go with the Ligier & Williams at some point. I think they will be the same as well. Since all 4 cars were race winners that year (Ferrari - 6 wins, Williams - 5 wins, Ligier - 3 wins, Renault - 1 win). So think this will be a good mod for people to drive different cars and not be handicapped by any performance problems. Eg. not everyone will choose the Pantera/GT40 or the Lotus-Ford type scenarios.

Which reminds me, Dijon is available, anyone want to reinact the Arnoux/Villeneuve battle ?

Is it possible to use the '79 mod with the trial version of rFactor, or do you need the full version?
