Anyone got one yet?

Got mine the other day, i must say i'm very dissapointed, most of the games i've tried are rubbish. Resistance is only about 1/4 as good from a technical perspective as COD3. Ridge Racer 7 actually looks slightly worse than RR6 on the 360. The machine is fairly big (same as a 360) and outputs twice the amount of heat, also it fails to recognise discs after several hours of use... The joypads are pants too. HDMI output is only ever so slightly crisper than VGA output.

Rant over.

I think I shall stick with the Wii when its out until the PS3 had its offical lunch. no rush and there is always crap games out for most consoles when they first come out. I remember the PS1 only good game was wipeout, PS2, Xbox, 360, etc...

Hmmm I was thinking of picking one up in the US this month. Where did you get yours from? Have you got it in the UK? any issues with regards using a US machine here?

Japan is the guinea pig country, the usa is for smoothing out the creases and europe will be the finished article.

btw - there should be firmware updates to rectify the problems as time goes by e.g. backward compatability issues.

Sony worldwide launch spring 06!!!

Currently backward compatability issues are realy down to the revision of ps2 chip in the ps3, until they replace that with a perfect ps2 emulator they'll stay, IMO any emulator wont work as well as the current hardware anyhow and the emulator is purely financial.

A Jap or US PS3 shoudl work in the UK , PSU is universal by the looks of it. Movies (and possiblty games) will be region locked, and some online functionality currently requires a Japanese Credit card I think.

Oooh looks like there going to have real issues with scalling resolutions in US.

Turns out the PS3 cant upscale games, i.e. make RFOM render at 720p and output 1080i. This is an issue to a lot of US TV owners who's TV's only accept 1080i, 480p/i and NOT 1080i. Shouldnt be an issue in Europe but isnt very good from a etch point of view. Hope they can fix it with firmware.

720p and 1080i. All 32" and below LCD TVs are 1366x768 resolution by default design.
Some are now 1920x1080i, with a small handful capable of 1920x1080p. These are all 37" and above.
Plasmas invariably have different physical resolutions due to the pixels being rectangular rather than square.

You'll likely see no difference or prefer the 720p output, which will be upscaled to fit the 768 vertical pixels.

will the europe launch date be delayed again? what do you guys think?

I'll try to dig up the article, but last week Phil Harrison was asked to confirm the March launch, he was unable to confirm this. What seems to be happening in both Japan and the USA is that Sony have under shipped what was promised. Initially, they said 2M ready for launch, then 1M, then 500,000 (split 400k America and 100k Japan, sorry Euroland). At release, this has dropped even further, with only 80,000 in Japan and approx 240,000 in the US, all down to low yields from the production line (many consoles have been failing quality control).

If Sony can't fix these production problems soon and can't ship out enough to meet the demand, there's no way they be in Europe in March. But who knows? Maybe all the issues have been solved and more PS3s are already on there way to stores. We'll have a much better understanding of the situation come xmas.

Edit: aha, here we go www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=20949

You know what's crazy for all those eBay purchasers, all they had to do is check Yahoo auctions (IN JAPAN) and they'd get a much better deal...

5 hours to go and still about £300 http://page5.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/
5 hours to go and still about £250 http://page10.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp

6 hours to go, retail price, not a single bid, and the guy has two for sale http://page8.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/

Too many people in Japan picked one up at launch to sell at auction and the market is totally over-saturated.

HOWEVER, the question is, can your Japanese language skills navigate you to the 'BUY IT NOW' button?

I was not paying much attention but how long did it take after launch of the Xbox 360 before you could walk into most high street shops and buy one?

It was around March-April time IIRC. That was for a November Launch.

About a month - 6 weeks but there were constant stock replenishments happening during that time. I picked mine up about a fortnight after the launch when I happened to be in Currys as they received a delivery.

Nearly got linux installed on it today - i think i might actually buy the european one* if i can get MPlayer running (HD media player goodness)... Well worth the money for that feature alone. Current version is buggy as hell, didn't like my usb keyboard and crashes often

* the one i have access to isn't mine.
