Spotted earlier on another thread that the Air Tattoo is on this weekend at RAF Fairford. I know a few of the esteemed members of these hallowed halls have been known to point their lenses skywards, so...
Firstly, is there a better day to go? I'd guess Saturday might be a smidgen quieter?
Any other tips? I've got one lucky shot of a couple of aircraft from Goodwood last year, but other than that I have no idea about aviation photography.
Oh, and is getting in going to be as difficult as I imagine if I'm not there at Sparrow's fart?

I'm going Saturday, but I think it is virtually the same both days. The flying programme is only being printed tomorrow. A lot of the aircraft haven't arrived as yet.
Don't know what the traffic will be like. I stayed in Worcester a couple of years ago and we got in before the gates opened (7am I think). Last year I flew in on a BA 747. No traffic problems there Shame they are not doing it this year.
What kind of camera set up have you got?

Fantastic day out. Get there early or you'll have a big walk to get in. Try not to carry too much stuff, as the static display goes on for 2 miles - LOTS of walking. Great flying display, but spectators are a fair bit back from the runway (my flying pics are usng an equiv lens of 480mm)
As for which day, look at the weather forecast....overcast and all the shots will have white/grey sky as a background. You really want a sunny day and lots of sun cream (windburn etc).
Enjoy and let's see your results.

Thanks guys. Looks like it'll be Saturday at Fairford and Sunday at SCR for the Mini Showdown then.
Weather forecast is sunny both days, 22*C on Saturday, 25*C on Sunday. As I can burn in 5 minutes under a 60 watt light bulb I'm screwed either way it seems.
Camera setup is an EOS 300D + 100-400L + 24-70L. 300D doesn't have spot metering which really bugs me trying to photograph birds in flight, so no doubt I'll have the same hassle with planes.

As for metering, easy peasy
Point at the runway, and fill the frame with tarmac. Shoot a picture in either Ap or Tv mode, and make a note of the exposure, eg 1/500s and f5.6 Use the histogram in play mode to check the exposure (look for a peak in the middle) and try again if need be, using a little exposure compensation up or down as necessary until you get a 'good' exposure.
Make a note of the 2 settings, then put the camera into manual exposure mode, and select the exposure settings you just memorised. Shoot away, and regularly check the exposure using histogram and playback to keep check of potential lighting changes.
Go for it.

Whatever happened to opening up two stops???
I echo what everyone else says - get in early, travel liiightt - easier to buy stuff to drink than lug it around for example - suncream - hat, make a point of giving your feet a rest. Basically prepare as if for a ten mile hike.
Thanks again for all the advice. Even if the metering advice has now removed the main justification I was using for upgrading to a 1DMk2. Damn - going to have to try even harder to justify it to myself now.
Gopher - according to the Event Timetable gates open at 07:30.

Yertis, what's the best route from Bristol, bearing in mind I'm unlikely to be able to get there as early as 7.30am?

Thanks Luca - should come in handy.
