Range on 1 tank of fuel
Discussion
I know that other threads have discussed this but on my way back from Europe I was determined to fill right up. I filled right up to the top of the neck and have so far done 235 miles, admittedly following mostly motorways, sometimes 50-60 mph in pouring rain.
Didn't move off the F for 25 miles
I've still got nearly a quarter of a tank left! I know its accurate 'cos I nearly ran out on the way to Belgium, had the needle at just above E and got 51 litres in! (Capacity 57 according to book but is some 'unusable' like on aircraft?)
This works out at about 27 mpg and a potential rang of over 300 miles. Caning it is a different matter of course

Cerbie rarely gets driven gently enough to get a cruising tank... But a couple of months ago, we drove to the NEC in Birmingham (from the south coast), and spent about 30 mins sitting in traffic. Got an average of about 24mpg, and we wen't taking it that easy (notmally get 200-220 from an average tank)...
During the fuel protests - I was on hols in the
Lake District. Virtually ran out of fuel 'up North',
had to wait for a fuel tanker...
Eventually got underway with a full tank (12 Gallons)
and managed 30mpg the whole way back from around Blackpool to Surrey on one tankful.
It was 330 miles and I still had some left in the Griff 500. Cruised at 55 ~ 60 the whole way - only time I've every been thru a clear M6 at Birmingham.
Hope I don't have to ever drive like that again....

Olly, one word how. I get a consitent 8-12 depending on how long the run is. Did 65 miles last weekend all motor way and it still took 16 quid to fill it up again.

Except the bit about a "clear M6 at Birmingham". Question: Will the M6 EVER be clear again. Thank God I wdon't use it anymore for access to Wales ..
Mine takes 40-41 litres when the petrol light comes on. So I've always wondered if there's really 17 litres of fuel left in the tank at that point or is the tank smaller than the 57 litres quoted in the handbook?
It doesn't bother me, in fact quite the opposite because it means I don't have to panic everytime the petrol light comes on. Safe in the knowledge that there's over 3 gallons left in the tank. (or is there? )
adamb : Presume you have a Cerb too then ? We average 17-18mpg for "normal" driving (i.e sprited A/B road driving).... (very late 1997 4.2)
Is your car standard, or has it been played with ? If it's drinking that much, you've either got a leak, drive everywhere on the rev limiter, or your ECU is throwing too much fuel at the engive the whole time (does it pop & bang an awful lot ?). It's probably worth resetting the ECU either way. This will set all the mappings back to normal, and will make the car learn them again (which could help the MPG)....
Lowest we've ever got (very enthusiastic driving for 3 hours at 3:00-6:00 one Sunday morning a couple of months after we got it), we got it down to about 14.8mpg..... And that was one hell of a drive !

Thanks for all the feedback - I'm not the only one who can get good range. The last thread I read had people only getting 160-180 miles per tank (There are 5 forward gears )
I think 27-28 mpg on the motorway is damn good for a 5 litre V8. I had a Mondeo 2.0 Si once that would only do 32 mpg on a run. If I was in a hurry, down to 30. Mind you, being in a hurry in a Mondeo is a bit relative compared to a TVR

I get about 20mpg these days. I got from LeMans to Calais on one tank which I guess is about 300 miles. I was touching 160mph in places and never dropped much below 100mph with lots of overtakes, so not exactly taking it easy. I was only getting 160ish miles per tank before my rebuild, which is probably 12mpg.

JMorgan, 170 thats a luxury on a trackday at Cadwell Park I got 82 miles out of tank on an Impreza Turbo, that included 20 miles on the road to get to the track and about 8 miles going to Louth to fill up at lunchtime!! Saying that the road miles used up about 1 gallon (because boy were we going slowly to Louth!), thats 54 miles with 11 gallons!! about 5mpg!!!!
davidy
But hey you've paid for all the revs so you might as well use them!!!

Luxury! I had it real hard. Every morning I would fill up the 520 and cruise down the motorway to Lydden. After 100 miles I would stop and put some more fuel in. Once there, each sprint run would take about 2-3 litres of fuel which works out at around 2 mpg on the track and about 10-11 on the Motorway. Mind you I do have lots of glasses and premier points...
