I need a new set of rears, currently i'm on OEM Contisport's 255/40ZR18 M3

after reading the forums these don't get great reviews, to be honest the kong of milage i do (20k a year) 95% motorway/dual carriageway the premiu for PS2's would be a waste...

So what are my options? should i go for sport contact 2 or 3? or something else? whats with all these extra bits? do i need XL? N0 etc? confused

anyone recommend a good place in Nottingham? I assume Sytners will *** rape me on price ?

My Z4M has the ContiSport M3 tyres on (not sure if they are standard fit for an 06 car but they were on it when I got it).

Managed to get a new set of rears for 160 GBP each - looked on tyretraders.com and managed to get my BMW garage to match this. They seem to work for me and have lasted well, so might not be the best but seem to do the job.

Based in the South-East though so not so good for you but worth a try!

Just don't mix tyres, make sure you have the same on the front as the rear.

One of the cheapest in the UK. With the mileage you do I'd try putting Falkens on your car. I've used them for 15 years & unless you drive like an idiot they will outlast the Conti's by over 3000 miles & are half the price...

Don't ever take any notice of people who tell you to use the same brand of tyres all round. As long as your tyres are identical on the same axle it matters not one iota. Buy Falkens or Toyo's & you'll be happy.

I also seem to recall that your rears should be 265/40 x 18....

Thanks OP I have same thoughts on my Z4M. Hi Mikez, my Z has 255/40 rears and is a 2006 car, maybe they changed in 2007? What are Falkens? I have heard of Toyo but never Falken...

You should not pay more than £190 - £200 for a pair delivered to your door. Bear in mind that most posters on forums like this are not "normal" people. They have company owned cars (but not for very much longer) or are the atypical spendaholics who DON'T own their own house & have credit card debts of £50K+.

Less than 15% on this forum actually own their cars outright. Most are on PCP or lease deals - hence all the C**P about fitting the most expensive tyres or 19" CSL wheels at £4000 a pop.

That's a bit cheeky.
I own my flat outright and my car was paid in cash.. were not all daft with money. It's not how much you get either it's how you use it that count's. I would still buy the best tyre's on my car though..Go to Costco or wait for their deals on PS2's wink

Agree with the CSL's comment. They do look nice but are not cheap.

Ha ha very funny post.

I agree to an extent with the choice of tyres most expensive is not always best. If you can afford a Z4m you have no reason to skimp on tyres if thats the case you should stick with a Fiesta or something more suitable!!

PS2s are very pricey, I'll be getting the updated Continetals for mine when the time comes may help the oversteer slightly!!

Just put some 275/30/19 Conti Sport 3's on my very expensive rear CSL's. No PCP here either!! Although with hindsight I wish I had taken them up on the offer....

CSL wheels are £1500, not £4000.

PS2s are £200 for the fronts and £220 for the rears (if you go to the right places).

Whole kit & caboodle for less than £2500.

I got rid of mine and went back to original 18" Z4MC wheels and find the ride/handling much more to my liking.

Really, most say the rides no different, but I guess it seems unlikely you could go up an inch in wheel size and not pay the price in rougher quality. Did you find the Z4M had more grip with the CSL's on?, I find I'm lacking grip sometimes in the dry, the T/C light comes on a bit to easy. Hoping 19's would sort this out?

That's a very bold statement!!!

They is thread after thread after thread after thread on the various forums of people moaning about the andling and twitchy nature of their M cars, and 9 times out of 10 it comes down the the person having different tyres on the front than on the back.

I have had a CSL and a regular M3 with mixed tyres and it feels as if there is something seriously wrong, like a rear spring snapped or completely shot bushes.
What M car are you mixing tyres on?? Maybe something like the M5 doesn't notice it as much??

The Falken FK452 is alright for the price, a little noisy and very crashy, but they last a long time and grip well, but they are not very progressive and when they let go it is hard to control compared with a PS2.

I went from PS2's the FK452 Falken and hated them, had 3 sets previously, but after going straight from PS2's I realised why they are cheaper. I bit the bullet and put PS2's back on.

Now one budget tyre that I was impressed with was the Khumo 31, grippy, progressive, quiet and comfy, not sure how long they last but others have said they seem ok on this front, I would seriously consider these next time.

Out of interest, what size fronts do you need??

I have a set of PS2's which are off an E46 M3 and have done less than 1000 miles on them.

The M3 uses 225/45/18 and 255/40/18, I put 235/45/18 and 265/40/18's on my car, gives a smidge more width and slightly more sidewall and works wonderfully.

I am off to the ring next weekend and will take one of the wheels with me as a spare, but if you are interested I could do all 4 for £400.
They cost me £760, but I have gone back to 19's.

Far better than spending £350 getting a pair of tat fitted!! It is an M car after all. wink

Actually I own my house but not my car. It's silly to buy your car outright when BMW's GFV was so artificially high. You may have some money, doesn't mean you understand what to do with it.

As for your comment on CSLs, clearly you have no taste as it's by far the nicest cosmetic upgrade you can make and serves not only to improve you cars looks but also to inject a little individuality into an otherwise safe design.

Be careful when you make sweeping statements about the "other 85%" of us. Without us BMW would not have bothered designing your car let alone marketing in the UK and you wouldn't have logged in to this forum to write your many posts as the forum would not exist in the same way.

Rant over.

From a tyre perspective i've researched this for a while now and i'm going to buy some Vredstein Ultratec when the spring arrives and my car awakes from it's winter hibernation. I think they represent (perhaps along with Toyos) the best mix of performance and value.

Definatly bin the Contis though, the compound is far too hard and they don't work unless you've been down the authbahns to soften them up a little.

If your looking for performance tyres at a good price then the Goodyear F1GSD are superb (not sure on wear) they now stop my M3 Evo from spinning up in 2nd gear in the wet off the throttle almost everywhere and also look the business!
There are about 5-10% noiseier than Pirellis, but better traction.
