BBC said:
Conservative Party co-treasurer Peter Cruddas offered access to the prime minister and chancellor for £250,000, the Sunday Times has alleged.
...
In the footage, Mr Cruddas is heard discussing what access different size donations would get.

"Two hundred grand to 250 is Premier League… what you would get is, when we talk about your donations the first thing we want to do is get you at the Cameron/Osborne dinners," he says.
...
"But within that room everything is confidential - you can ask him practically any question you want.

"If you're unhappy about something, we will listen to you and put it into the policy committee at number 10 - we feed all feedback to the policy committee."

BBC Link with the video.

Cruddas isn’t much of a salesman but I do love the last bit. Surely the public could bank together to raise £250,000 and ask for a policy in the national interest? Nothing else seems to be working to get the people we elect to do the things we want them to do but maybe this party bribery will work thumbup.

Not a bad idea!!! so what to do ? instead of a number 10 petition that some minion looks at and files under BIN... you have a paypal account, and every pound donated counts as a vote ????? it might just workyes

Quite the reverse. - a brilliant bit of marketing IMHO. Now everyone knows about the service available.

Every time it looks like the conservatives might have turned a corner they disappoint, it’s like they never learned from Major’s government about maintaining an image free from political corruption and hypocrisy.

So, what is this? “Cash for Questions - Part 2"?

This is exactly why we should ban career politicians.

I had no idea that Cruddas was involved with the Cons at that level.

It beggars belief that he would be allowed to be involved. Anyone who works in the City knows what he is.

Another Coulson.

Just how many more of these wholly inappropriate creatures are in such positions?

To be fair, it is hardly exclusive to Cameron. However, the suggestion that he didn't know what was happening is ludicrous.

As you say, Major was largely free from the corruption that has engulfed all those since and many before. Got to say I underestimated the chap at the time, and I reckoned he was pretty good. He was let down by the squabbling of those he was leading. I thought they were unelectable and so voted for Blair.

Edited to add quotes:

Cruddas, who has given £1.2m to the party, said he had used his access to Cameron to object to the Tobin tax on financial transactions:

“He said don’t even worry about it . . ."

Cruddas said that big donors could not determine policy, but he would make sure that their suggestions were fed into the No 10 policy unit.

“If you are unhappy about something ... we’ll listen to you and we’ll put it into the policy committee at No 10. We feed all feedback into the policy committee,” he said.

From what I can tell, 'donations' for political favours is, as they say, as old as the hills. This latest episode is only a surprise because of the apparent stupidity of the individual involved. Surely by now they'd have figured out how to do this without being caught?

Though it really grates to say it, I think the only realistic way to sort this is to fund parties directly from the public purse and regulate thier activity such that doing this type of thing becomes a criminal offence with a custodial sentence. Not likely to happen though.

You'd think that the main thought in minds of members of the current Government would be "If we behave in even a reasonably sensible fashion we'll look good compared to the last lot". But some of them cant even manage that.

Spot on and it's surpsing with recent bad examples to go on how supposedly smart people can be so stupid and repeat the same mistakes but we can't escape the reality that these self-serving individuals are detached from reality and living on a planet of their own.
