RIP Gerry Anderson
Discussion
R.I.P. Gerry. You entertained possibly the luckiest generation of children there has been and I don't know who's responsible for the rubbish that kids get for TV today, but they could learn a lesson or two from you. Thanks for Captain Scarlet, Thunderbirds, etc. You really created some special stuff and I have always wanted to own Lady P's pink Roller and Scarlet's Spectrum Pursuit car.

Thank you for the Thunderbirds
RIP
My sentiments exactly. I still remember waiting for 4.55 p.m on Friday afternoons for Thunderbirds. My favourite was Virgil Tracy and the big green machine - Thunderbird 2. The launch sequence was something else. The episode where Thunderbird 2 makes a forced landing after being shot at by the navy had me crying buckets at the time. I've since watched that scene again and the special effects were extremely well done for their time. No CGI's there.RIP
The arch villain, The Hood used to give me nightmares with those glowing hypnotic eyes but no harm was done. Last I heard, The Hood's alive and well and he's changed his name to Jimmy Carr.
I recall reading a magazine article back in the 1980's. Gerry Anderson had met the Concorde design team who were great fans of Thunderbirds, The story goes that they actually worked out how Thunderbird 2 could fly, despite its great weight.
I doubt if Thunderbirds would be shown these days without parental advisory warnings and censorship because of all the car chases and gun fights. The Tracy family were a bunch of snoutcasts. Lady Penelope was never without a fag. Then there's that classic scene of Parker laying roaring drunk in the back of the Roller. But what the hell? I loved Thunderbirds.

It depends how you bring kids up. I introduced my son to Thunderbirds at a very young age, and he was hooked from the first episode. His work is timeless, and brilliant.

Anderson met them incognito, embarassed that they might look down on him, but when they found out who he was they were all in total fanboy mode.Edited by Langweilig on Thursday 27th December 12:45
Another story I like is of Anderson getting a phone call from Stanley Kubrick, when the latter was making '2001', inviting him to lunch. "OK", says Anderson jokingly, "but I hope you're not just trying to poach my special effects staff"
"Oh well, there's no point in having lunch then", replied Kubrick, and promptly hung up on him.
