Anyone use these smaller energy suppliers you've never heard of. Just settled into our new house and thought I'd compare our bills before winter sets in and looks like I can half our British gas bill with a company called zog energy. Any smaller companies to avoid.

Also do any of these comparison sites list usage and service charge rather than showing saving then faffing about trying to find breakdown costs.

Not so small anymore but we use First Utility. Cheaper than we could find elsewhere and they answer the phone and are call centre is UK based. That's enough for me.

Ovo energy were excellent in my old house until I moved 10 months ago.

I can't remember the exact figures but they were paying me 3% interest I think on any credit balance. So I overpaid by £300 per month - you are limited - and I basically used it as a savings account.

Coop were great on phone and simple online, until they replaced their old perfectly acceptable system with a new TOTALLY broken system that was literally a step back although apparently "state of the art" Oracle website. This system is so state of the art that they were busy with calls for 6 months from people locked out their accounts, and you couldn't get through to them to get your account back. It took me 6 months to get access to my account. 6 months!

Ovo on the other hand have been great to change to, and their website is excellent - simple but actually works. Bills are calculated properly, monthly charges.

It's a miracle! Makes you wonder what on earth the big suppliers are doing with themselves to make it so complicated.

After being shafted by Eon for far longer than I should've let happen I finally did something about it and changed to GB Energy a while back as they came up cheapest and reckoned they could save me ~£30 per month on my bill (for a 1 bed place). Despite all the doom and gloom about them on the MSE forum thread, the switch couldn't have gone any smoother and I've had no issues inputting meter readings on their site (a common complaint) nor any other issues.

I'm trying out a small supplier having moved into our place a few months ago.
I doubt they could get it much more wrong than the big boys; a bill which should have been around £40 hit the mat for £260 - their cock-up.
Let's see if the small players are any better.

I moved to First Utility, it wasn't the smoothest switch over ever (something wrong in the meters register or something like that?). The big 6 really rip you off in comparison so I don't see me ever going back to them.

My experience of GB Energy is as good as that of the earlier poster.
I'm saving £25 a month compared to the Co-op.

Cheers i think we will give zog a go.11p/day and 2.69220p/kw seems a a great price.£50/year saved in service charges alone and nearly half price on the gas we use. I'll update in a few months on how they are.

Another happy ovo customer.

They generally come up the cheapest for me and they offer repeat customers the same deals as new customers.

The app is good and most of all, the 3% interest is great. I am about £1K in credit with them and they keep wanting to reduce my monthly dd smile

I was with Scottish Power but was fed up with them increasing the monthly payment that in my opinion was not needed. We came to the end of the year contract so they gave me an estimate on the next years costs.Gas and electricity last year was £1450,they estimated this year £1350 but I decided to go on the U Switch website where First Utility were cheapest and second only a little bit more expensive was Sainsburys energy which is basically a British Gas account with Sainsburys name on it but a lot cheaper at £1050.so a saving of £400 on last year.

I rang U Switch and the guy went through all my figures supplied by Scottish Power for last years isage and confirmed I would save £400 with Sainsburys and sorted the change over for me.Scottish Power were very slow giving me back the £275 I was in credit on my account.

I did not go to First Utility as I had never heard of them but had heard of Sainsburys and there was only £50 difference.

A few weeks ago I had my cavity walls insulated through Eco Energy Wales that would normally cost £1250 for a 5 bed detached house but was done for free.I think this will save aboutt £200 on my gas.

I may be a bit optimistic but this year I am looking to pay about £800 for Gas and Electricity compared to £1450 last year. Its a tough ask but will be interesting what the final cost will be.

One thing you have to watch when switching to these cheaper deals are the minumum term lock-ins and exit fees. Most of these companies seem to prey on you changing to them, attracted by the comparatively cheap prices then within 6 months of you being with them they hike their prices to being roughly the same as the competition. I noticed this myself with GB Energy whose rate is "variable" but they don't have any fixed term or exit fees so I can jump ship to someone else if they get silly with their prices.

I'm now with Sainsburys and just opted for the August 2016 fix. Nobody can get near it based on my profile and new postcode. If Ovo were within a few quid I'd jump yes

I'm with Sainsbury's now - cheapest I can find and I've been happy with the customer service so far.
