Hi all

I need some help. I've never had an accident before and last night, someone went into the back of me while I was stationary. It's nothing that bad but my car needs a new bumper. I called my insurer who hooked me up with a company that will provide me a courtesy car.

Then I got a call from the other car's insurance company offering me a courtesy car and I explained that my insurer has organised that for me. The other car's insurer said they will only £48 a day for the car and any difference I would have to pay. I told I would ring them back to decide.

Then I got a call from Albany Assistance who said that the £48 a day limit was just a scare tactic and that they would provide me with an equivalent car (I have a 130i) and recoup all the money from the 3rd party. I Googled Albany Assistance and got some terrifying results. So what do I do? Is it better to get the courtesy car from the 3rd Party Insurer?

IF the 3rd party insurer is taking responsibility, and providing a reasonably like for like hire car, I'd deal with them personally.

Saves messing about.

I thought all this corrupted bollards had stopped. It needs to.

They're all desperate for you to choose them as a supplier as they get a kickback from the hire company, which in turn, we actually all pay for in our premium.

Most countries I know would regard this as fraud and people would be convicted and sent to jail. Why is the UK so lenient ?

an accident management company can rent what they like for you
but ask them who pays the difference if the other insurer doesn't agree to pay the full hire car costs?

are Albany going to pick up the tab, or will they make you sign an agreement which you are liable for any of their costs which are not recovered?

Dont take the 3rd party accident management car, it isn't guaranteed that the insurance co of the person who hit you will pay out.

Take the hire car from the other chaps insurance, and tell them it needs to be half decent or you will go down the accident management route.....

Your own insurer is trying to make money out of the situation to justify the fact your premium will go up next year. Dont involve them any more than you have to they wont add any value to the situation.

Yeah, I've yet to look at the agreement as they haven't sent it yet but they said they'll recover all costs from 3rd Party insurer, I'll pay nothing. But I've also read online a whole bunch of stuff about them not collecting the car, claiming more money that 3rd Party usually refuse to pay.

I think I'll take the car from the 3rd Party insurer. Makes way more sense.

This accident stuff is such a hassle.

Yup, not your fault but your premium will go up, your car will never be quite the same again, and you do all the running around!

Well done OP.
Albany will be looking to give you the most expensive car they "reasonably" can. This will give them the maximum rental profit, that they will then attempt to reclaim from the third party.

The cost of everyone's policy goes up as result.

I've had call after call offering me this and that. The whole thing feels like a racket.

Dealing with cars these days is getting more and more depressing. Over priced petrol, VED, parking fines becoming a viable source for councils, dodgy home trade dealers, £25 every time you want to check if the has had an accident, insurance that barely insure, people who don't indicate etc etc

Tough day...

Agreed avoid Albany Assistance completely.

They are a bunch of shysters

Deal with the fault drivers insurance company direct.

Agreed. There should be a set procedure regarding what happens when making a claim. It seems insurance companies and a number of 3rd parties seem to take it as an opportunity to lease the most expensive car possible.

This conflicting advice from insurance companies and accident management companies needs to stop. How are you supposed to know who is acting in your best interests?

I feel sorry for the people who don't have know-how to search online for stuff like this. I only hope whoever does search online finds this thread to open their eyes a bit.

So update:

I called the 3rd Party insurers. They were very helpful. They're called Market Study and deserve the recognition for being clear and upfront with all the information. I told my insurer that I didn't know what the process was and they took advantage by throwing offers and services in my face. I had to search online to get the right information. My insurer didn't give me the option to find a garage myself for the fix and didn't deal with the courtsey car themselves. Market Study, on the other hand, told me to go and find someone I trust to do the fix, get a quote, set a date and come back when they would order my courtesy car from Enterprise who they have a contract with. I don't pay anything. Whereas my insurer asked me to pay my excess before claiming it back when the fix was finished. If the accident isn't my fault, why don't the insurers pay my excess and claim it back themselves? I pay insurance to protect myself from stuff like this.



Anyway, thanks for your help, all. You have just saved me a lot of hassle and potentially a lot of money.

I've got a prick who run into the back me now saying I reversed into him. This is a story fabricated by his dad who wasn't even at the scene but turned up later.furious

How is anyone supposed to defend stuff like that? I got home yesterday only to find this Crash For Cash show on the telly. Perfect timing.

I hate to say it but it may be time for a dashcam.

All my cars and vans are with Marker Study, we had a van total loss with our driver at fault a few weeks back and it all went very smoothly.
