So, heading back down the M6 Toll and see lots of signs in the services for "contactless payments preferred at the toll" and "Quickest way" etc...

I think great, I'll chuck all my stuff in the front and just need my phone.

Get to the booth and stick my phone on the reader to be told "Please enter your card"... Argh! Scan around and see the small notes, the tolls do not accept Apply Pay / Google Wallet payments. fk.

So I can't get out of the car, as I'm too close to the booth - hazards on, back up a bit so I can get out, pop the front, get out, grab my wallet, jump back in, faff for card, pull forward, swipe and done.

Luckily it was quiet so didn't piss anyone off, but what a PITA!

Join the club! They need to improve their payment methods. They gave me 7 days to pay on-line when I only had my phone with me without a penalty charge.

I assumed anywhere that took contactless payments takes NFC payments from phones these days, but I must confess that even as a millennial I still prefer bonking a small plastic card against a reader so have my wallet anywhere I would have my phone anyway.

However, I use an AMEX so feel your pain at having my preferred method of payment rejected by places that really should accept it biggrin

They haven't taken cash for a while. If you turn up without a card, you fill in a form and have to pay later.

Glad I'm not the only one... The pain being my bag with wallet wasn't in the cabin, but locked in the front so wouldn't just reach and get it.

I guess contactless is preferred vs. sticking a card in a slot (the "old" way)

Thought it may be a legal thing as you have use your phone and it’s illegal to use phone in a car.

Paying for things whilst the car is stopped is specifically allowed for in the legislation.

How annoying. It’s rare I use a card now, but I have it in the apple wallet on the back of my phone for times like this, or buying fuel.

There are still many Councils who run car parks where the Contactless only works with physical cards and are still not enabled for NFT Phone contactless. No notices, just a constant stream of declined transactions.

Contactless works fine with my iPhone, but it's not via ApplePay, just the debit card stored in the Apple Wallet for NFC payments.

You got yourself quoted on quite a few news sites:

Anyway, I was looking this up as I don't use the M6 Toll very often, so I looked up how much it is now and their website says about no phones.

Hmm, how would it know ? It's contactless, and I can't see how the tappy thing would know if it's a card or a phone being tapped.

blimey i thought having your card loaded up on the phone was identical to having a contactless card.

So do I. I know it does not use the same card number, it uses a virtual one, but so what ? Anywhere you can tap with a card, you can tap with a phone, apart from the M6 Toll, or so they claim.

I wonder if they are not making it up ? Because they don't want people fiddling with their phones, having to unlock them (which seems random to me whenever I use mine), or dropping them as they lean out of your window tap.

Surely it's simply because it is illegal to use the phone whilst driving.

It used to be, but not anymore for payments:

I KNEW I'd get my 15 minutes of fame!!

However, not quite fame as a minor complaint on a random internet forum, but anything will do smile

Does that make me a published author now? biggrin
