Having test driving a few manual cars for the misses over the weekend, I relised I miss my gearbox sometimes. Don't get me wrong in the city you can't beat the auto mode.
So I went for a run in manual mode as I have never realy used this & got used to it.
I have now found even more joy in my car. once you get used to it it is a doddle to use and so smoth. I think I actualy prefer the tip box in manual mode over an actual manual box.
bear in mind i dont track the car, if I did I know a manual would be better but for road use I cant fault it.
Does anyone else use there tip in manual all the time? any comments apart from thr useual "tips are rubbish"

Had exactly the same thing yesterday - driving out to the country, and was getting annoyed with it always going to 3rd when you floor it on the motorway, so tapped it into manual and had a play with the buttons and then just kept it there. Theres some nice twisty bits going up to my parents and just really enjoyed myself - also easier to concentrate as never have to take your hands off the wheel
Its certainly staying in auto in the city, but when it gets a bit clearer from now on, im going to be back to the buttons

Us tiptronic drivers seem to get a hard time from the 'Porsche purists' who obviously prefer manuals... Having owned several manuals before I totally agree that a manual is the way to go if you're looking for a true driving experience, going to use on track, etc, etc
However, the tiptronic is not as bad as sometimes potrayed here... Yes, the auto mode sucks but get used to the manual mode and it's actually quite good.. I genuinely drive 90% of the time in manual mode. Once Porsche adopt Audi's DSG box in 2008/9, that's the one I'll definitely have..
I use the car as an everyday car and this includes being stuck in the worst central London traffic for 1.5hours a day... For this the tiptronic is fabulous... Also still good enough to scare myself stupid when I fancy a blast on my favourite B roads...!!
Anybody thinking of buying a Porsche, give the Tip a true go and you'll find it does take some getting used to but can be a truly good choice..

Also funny! wait and see how many buy the new Tip because it's quicker (claimed) then the new manual. wonder how many will change opinion regarding the Tip!

This is from the man with 4wd, I take it you have your little ritual every time you get into your car turning off all those driver aids. How can you preach about diluteing the driving experiance when you keep going on about the TT being better than a GT3.

Couldn't disagree more! When I bought mine I was doing a lot of driving in central London and saw the Tiptronic as 'an acceptable compromise'
Its not! Its one of the worst autos I've ever driven, way behind Jaguar, BMW, MB.
And 'manual' mode isn't much better, that said I use 'manual' 95% of the time.
It has spoiled the whole ownership experience for me, I'll never use a Tiptronc again.
Though, thankfully, it hasn't put me of 911's for ever.

I absolutely agree on everything written before too.
I'm not terribly keen on full auto mode, and only ever use it just for the (very) occassional slog round the gridlocked streets of Brighton. For everything else manual mode is a must and suits my "quick, but not boy racer" style perfectly. DSG (when it arives) will be awesome and theres even a (slim) chance that some of the manual purists may even have some small cause to rethink...........!!!!
Oddly enough my wife loves the full auto mode and drives terrifically well with it (must be that one of those supposed 5 transmission programmes is exactly suited to her, or remembers her or something), but absolutely cannot get on with the tiptronic - and for me the reverse is true - so, two happy bunnies for the price of 1 car methinks !!

As already mentioned, I agree that the auto box is rubbish... However, I like the manual mode and after getting used to it I think its great. Happens to suit my circumstances very well so don't in any way consider it a 'compromise'

The 911 should NEVER have been offered as a Tiptronc. (ie., AUTO)
Its anathema to the finest sports car in the real world.
If Porsche had offered a more sophisticated electronic gearbox like the Ferrari F1, then fair enough.
Also, didn't Porsche develop the original DSG for racing, still not offered in road cars.

One thing that annoys me on this forum are the huge sweeping statements about Porsche cars and what they're supposed to be for... There's a reason why Porsche make so many versions of the same car (in this case the 997). There is no such thing as a standard Porsche - live with it!!
For example take a standard 997 and then add:
A: Tip, PASM, BOSE sound, Sunroof, Sat Nav, Leather, etc
or
B: Manual, Sport Chrono, -20mm suspension, short shift, sports exhaust, PCCB, etc
Option A gives you what I consider to be one of the best true GT cars on the market today: comfortable, well built, powerful, good handling, etc.
Option B gives you a hardcore sports car capable of real track work, etc
On top of this you can customise Porsche to your heart's content to make sure you get exactly what you want. I went for Option A as it meets all of my requirements and love it. Although you see so many 997s on the road nowadays they are all different according to the owner's taste and that is one of the appealing things about Porsche for me. Does that make me less of a 'Real Porsche Driver'? Do I care?
Please wake up, smell the coffee and realise that Porsche is just catering to everybody's tastes to maximise sales and fill every market gap. Also, it's guys like us buying everyday cars (Cayennes, etc) that ultimately give Porsche enough cash to develop the real hardcore versions of the cars...

Yes, I struggle with that too, but Mrs Hussar has a much smaller/lighter right foot and never wears riggers boots, and as a consequence her kickdowns seems sooo much more controlled than mine!!
