Silver 911 Carrera 'EDP *V'
Discussion
Some of the worst driving I've seen on public roads in ages.
Driving on the A19 towards York this morning and we noticed a silver Porsche 911 Cabrio (reg EDP *V) coming up behind us at speed. It overtook us, very nearly hitting us when it pulled back in. it then proceeded to try and squeeze past every single gap in the (busy) flow of traffic to press on. I counted three separate occasions where it narrowly missed oncoming traffic, one of which the oncoming car had to skid onto the pavement to avoid you.
In the ten or so miles we tailed it, it managed to advance about eight cars ahead of us, and we didn't overtake a thing.
Was he trying to show off or what?
We were in an Audi RS6+ Avant - a car that would see his off with no trouble at all - but we didn't feel the need to drive like to$$ers and endanger everyone else. We stuck to the speed limit (at most) on a road where conditions meant anything more would have been foolish.
So, Mr. Porsche driver, well done for showing yourself up!

I presume you and the other cars with shall we say, less ambition, left him with a large enough gap to slide into on his way past overtaking you?
Sometimes I find people who are resigned to not overtaking don't leave those of us in more of a hurry the gap to do it -- and sometimes they'll close up whatever gap there is as some sort of bizarre punishment...
Of course I wasn't there, and it's just as likely he was a dangerous tt as described, but I do like to explore the opposite viewpoint sometimes
Something a wise man once told me was that before you judge someone who you think is going too fast and taking too many chances, think they might be rushing to an emergency of some sort and to just give them an inch doesn't harm anyone, indeed is more likely to save harm.

Agreed.
Maybe the car was stolen ?

bar a real (by that I mean very very real) emergency I am struggling to think of anything that would justify such driving.

We hadn't deliberately stuck ourselves to the car in front and, as far as I was aware, neither had anybody else (obviously I can't speak for other peoples reactions to his speed). Traffic on the road was busy and constant with an average speed of circa 50mph, and I doubt it there was a >2 second gap between each vehicle, but no-one was deliberately trying to block him out if that's what you mean.
I appreciate that someone in an emergency would maybe drive with more haste than others, and I also appreciate that sometimes people just want to go faster than others - neither my father nor myself are the sort that don't think anyone has the right to overtake us. But this guy was clearly driving like an absolute clown. NO emergency gives him the right to put oncoming traffic in clear danger, and as I say he very nearly did hit a lady in a Land Rover Discovery.
We actually passed him as we heading onto the A64 (as he continued into York in a separate lane) and he was driving far more sedately at that point - it was a dark haired guy perhaps in his mid-30's. He was dressed in business attire and certainly didn't 'look' to have stolen it, although I'll conceed that I don't know whether he had or not. My guess is he hadn't.
As I say, emergency or not he was really showing himself up and putting everyone else in danger. NOTHING justifies putting other people in such serious risk.

My point was that he wasn't being held up by the performance of the cars in front, but rather the quality of the driving by those in front.
Please don't think I was having a pop at Porsche drivers - my last car was a 996 Turbo so I'm an ex-Porsche driver myself. I was more concerned with his driving style, the sort of driving which does to be fair sometimes give drivers of a certain marque a bad name, a reputation that they don't deserve.

so are you
noticed your first argumentation was that you meant didnt, I had a little chuckle at first as I thought you hadnt realised
but now youve changed it. . . . . . .
so, again, we have another almost accident involving a porsche.
you should have video'd it.

Was this country roads or through towns?
If the former, could explain him making haste initially, then calming down - we've all probably had a heavy foot every now and then

The initial road is the A19, an extremely busy country road that was packed with traffic. No excuses for his style of driving in such heavy traffic.
If traffic had been a bit less busy then his driving might have been more acceptable.

Yes you had me thinking that I'd written the wrong thing. But then I realised it was a joke. A well-disguised one though. Really funny that. I bet you're an expert at these disguised jokes, the ones you have to explain to people.
I would have placed a similar post on the BMW thread had the car in question been a BMW, or the Ford thread had it been a Ford, etc.
word of warning
DONT post in the BMW forum.
no matter what you say, if you think the playfull things said here are bad DO NOT POST IN THE BM forum.
they are mighty proud of their badge and have memories (not man boobs) like elephants and snipe you from the sidelines for months to come.
so where you driving the audi?

Nope, my Dad was (it's his). We were taking a friend to go and have a butchers hook at a couple of cars near Harrogate.
Point taken on the BMW forum, although I've always found them to be alright on there.
As I say I'm not 'anti' any car, the Porker I had remains the best car I have ever owned. I posted the rant here simply to express my anger towards a single driver, rather than the car he was driving. I suspect he wouldn't have driven in quite the same way had he been in a Rover 214si, but he'd probably has been as much a numpty had he been in a similarly-powered BMW, Audi or anything else.

On a totally unrelated note, has anyone else noticed how surprisingly little midrange GT3s have?

yeah yeah, you changed the post once you realised your error, mabe you should do the same with this thread?
ohh and next time, if you challenge and cant keep up, get out my way or youll be on the kerb
what is the point of this post?
you were driving along and some tosser was driving badly. OK, have a moan. but you claim not to be having a pop at 911 drivers in general. If so, what is the purpose of posting in the porsche forum? have you also posted this in general gassing or the audi forum to which you would reasonably be expected to contribute?
Of course you are having a go. At least be honest enough to admit it. And recognise that many of the Porsche drivers on this forum (911 drivers or not) have the intelligence to recognise your post for what it is, and to be justifiably irritated by it.
On the way home yesterday I witnessed three incidents of tw@tish or dangerous driving. I might have felt inclined to share those thoughts with like-minded PHers on a forum i contibute to regularly. But life is too short to post "oi youre a tw@t" type posts on the Toyota, Audi and Kia Pride forums, and I would probably have missed the intended targets if i had
