I'd be very grateful for your advice on buying an RS4 Avant.

After much deliberation (only about 12 months)I have decided that the time has come to put my hand in my pocket and actually buy one. I have a budget of £35k and want the peace of mind a dealer can offer. There appears to be plenty of choice at this price point but my question is what should I actually be paying?

I'm crap at haggling as I'm usually so excited all sense goes out of the window and I'm seduced by the sales BS.

Is there a massive margin on these things or can you walk away with much of a discount on a £35k car? It is a cash purchase, no p/x.

A few friends and workmates claim to have had good discounts as it was "end of the year/quarter/month" and the stock needed shifting. Is this really a factor, or more of an urban myth?

I realise that if you don't ask, you don't get but I'd be grateful for your advice.

Many Thanks,

Jim

You must decide on the spec you want ..

Do you understand what is standard and not ...

Then look for a car ... check on the oil changes .. I've done mine every 5k miles ...

I would not be put off buying privately, but check it is not on finance ..

The car is absolutely brilliant, does like petrol if driven hard AND always put super unleaded in it .

If you want to know more pm a landline number to me and I acn answer any questions you have ..

It is a good time to buy - just look at the stories around here of dealers going bust.

What makes your job harder is that the RS4 is very much in demand. Hardly a recession buster but supply doesn't exceed demand in quite the same way as for most models.

Be prepared to walk away if the dealer won't haggle and accept that you might miss out on one or two cars that way. It's too easy to be seduced by the car & pay more than you planned.

And what a cracking car it is too! Good choice and good luck! thumbup

RS4 Avants seem to bucking the trend for poundslide so far, which has made me nervous about jumping in.

but its got few rivals so I can see it continuing to hold for a while...so i'm tempted

No M3 touring of course,Alpina B3 far too new,C55 not really same league and C63 AMG are really firm in price.

mmmm must resist

RS4's have been depreciating by 1500+ quid each month. For reference, I sold my Grey 57 Plate Avant at the end of August. I was the first owner, it had covered 5000 miles and high Spec, 55k's worth new.

Highest dealer bid was 39k, most were 35-37K. I sold it for 41k privately. If I was trying to sell the car now, dealer bids would be approx 30k. These day's it's hard work trying to find a dealer who has any money to buy anything.

So, You should be able to buy a 10k miles, 57 plate well spec'ed Avant from a dealer for 33 - 34k ish and 31-32 private.

I would agree with this based on my friends experience of having to px a top spec example last week. They are a great car, but bottom line is very few are selling at the moment. There are loads on the market at 34-35k which have been offered at that level for the past 3 months or so both at dealers and privately. I have seen cars reduced from £35k down to £31k and then when it has still not sold and the dealer has no margin left, it has been re-priced to £35k so that it will presumably be reduced in price again in the future and advertised as a 'bargain' The new S4 will impact on pricing once launched as it is a very capable car pitched at a competitive pricepoint - yes all the hardcore RS owners will say it is a different animal, but it will impact as the RS4 benefits from no serious competition from the current S4.

Bottom line if you are buying, take your time and haggle hard, as there will never be a better time to buy a car like this and the fact that there are lots of people advertising similar cars at a similar pricepoint does not mean that is their market value if they are not selling. Also remember that cars like this get emotional attachment from private owners who will always think theirs is the best example and will potentially be losing lots of money on it. My friend bought his for £47k in March from a dealer and got back £33k on it, when most owners would have it sitting in the classifieds at £38k not selling. This means you may well find better deals at dealers who are more attuned to the real state of the market at the moment

I would never consider downgrading my RS4 to a 2009 S4 no matter how cheap ...

The reality is that the whole market has moved ... so anything I would consider is now less of a gap to fill and buy ...

I am not suggesting existing RS4 owners will. But I am suggesting that potential new owners will weigh up a 2009 S4 vs a 2007 RS4 and that the new S4 is good enough / such a step forwards from the previous S4 that it will take away some of the potential buyers of used RS4's which will impact on prices

The RS4 is not holding money or bucking the trend. Don't believe this blinkered hype. I sold mine 1st week september, black avant with good options 57 plate with 16,000 from new, 12 months old, bid £37,500 from dealer. Still sitting on Bentley's forecourt in cardiff, now at £36,000 I believe. These cars are not any better news than any other at the moment.

There's a major problem with the RS4.

It's two cylinders and nearly 100bhp short of what you really should get for that money...

http://www.bmw.co.uk/bmwuk/auc/car_details/0,,1260...

That was a 70k car new.

I had an RS4 Avant 06/56 and loved it but changed it for a 635D Sport great car but really missing a petrol car, so am now looking at M5 s for around the same price as RS4 Avant (well a little bit more but not far off)

RS4 or M5 both great cars but i would recommend you test drive both before you make a decision

Good luck nothing better than buying a new car!

Just out of interest, why not a 650 or M6 or did you just fancy a change?

I have 3 children and the M5 better suits to fit them all in, and i have always wanted one, also i think i have a problem as i have a car for about 8 months and then thats it i am looking for a new one! the only other option for me is to wait until the new RS6 Avant comes down in price?

The only problem, if you can call it that, but an M5 will consume a lot more petrol than an RS4. I heard of one guy saying it was such a pain always being at the pump .. let alone the money.

At the end of the day, it just comes down to what you prefer in looks and style, both great cars.
