Sorry for the naming of HSBC, I;m not so much shaming, they are a good bank BUT they have recently implemented this stupic flipping device I need to use to logon to my online banking, so instead of being able to logon anywhere I had a PC and internet I now have to carry this thing round with me and mash the keypad to make it work.

I really think it's stupid, am I over-reacting or is this causing inconvenience for other HSBC customers??

What is wrong with me putting an IB number in, some parts of my password and a D.O.B. in FFS!!!

 shoot

It is a first class pain in the arse.

I was away the other week and needed to pay something online. I didn't have my fob, couldn't work around it.

Very pissed off with it.

I have the HSBC one and it does seem a bit of a faff, the Barclays one on the other hand is superb.

Hmmm, two factor authentication, something you know and something you have. Most of the banks are doing it and, yes, I agree that it's daft. Or at least they should provide a version with cut down facilities that you can use without it.

But also there are better ways of doing two factor using your phone and SMS or a smartphone app, giving you a device you need to carry is expensive and unhelpful

Good, Shall also be moving me thinks, one of the best things was being able to check my balance anywhere, anytime, on the sly!

So which banks DON't use these now then? I know Barclays & Lloyds DO, who doesn't???

I still haven't activated mine yet. Damn annoying though, although I guess HSBC have worked out the lost business will cost them less than the fraud.

I'd like to know who else, as when travelling around I don't really want to be carrying around.

Nationwide apparently introduced them, but I never got one. Don't know if it was just for a limited section of customers or if it's a pilot and there are more on the way, though.

I can't sync mine with my account. I've phoned HSBC to order a new one but that was over a month ago and despite numerous calls since and vague, badly spoken assurances to the contrary, nothing has been forthcoming. Because of this, I now can't access my account on line.

I'm glad they implemented this device because it was the final nail in the coffin for me to switch banks. I've been meaning to do it for ages but just hadn't got round to it.

Pain in the ass. They also have a different system for Business banking which makes it a double pain in the arse. Why they can't use the same device/method is beyond me.

Argh!

Update - Just spoken to HSBC, this is in fact due to a new law that has stated ALL banks operating in the UK MUST increase security to stop fraud, this seems to be the way many of them are going and the new security must be in place by 2012!

They are taking feedback and the woman I spoke to said a common suggestion has been to have more than one of these things so at least you can keep one in the car, or at work etc.

So, ring them up, give them some feedback, but it seems all the banks will be changing over the next few months frown

RBS only use this type of reader when you are adding a new payee so regular payments don't need it. Better system IMO.

Natwest have the card reader, but it's only used for adding a new payee, thanfully not for everytime you log in.

I don't know if mine have all been on the fritz since their arrival, but my barclays ones are damn near impossible to read - and no I'm not a coffin dodger before it's suggested.

The HSBC ones I've had for some time and they're much better. Both are still a royal pain in the arse, especially as I never remember to take mine away with me when I'm overseas.

I'm pissed off with having to use this silly device.

Its because people cant keep their PC's secure no doubt, so we all have to suffer.

its a pain in the arse.

I think Barclays were one of the first to introduce this absolute pile of toss. In one moment of idiocy, Barclays managed to take, in my opinion, one of the best online banking platforms and turn it into one of the very worst.

Seems as if HSBC with whom I also bank have gone down the pile of toss route as well.
